Toyota and General Motors’ Chevrolet division used to have a combined factory in Fremont, CA. (Tangent—after it shut down and was empty for years, it became the first Tesla factory.) Anyway, as the lead investor, Toyota wanted top billing. Everyone thought the name should reflect both companies. One of the first suggested names was Toyo-let.

This was rapidly voted down by GM. (The eventual name was New Motors, I think.)
