I've been scraping by with a basic dmm and will buy something nicer when I get my biden bucks but I ordered this little $25 transistor and component tester to hold me over that's well reviewed: on hackaday, a flashlight forum. Pretty impressed with it. Had it out of the box for all about 2 minutes today before it gave me the answer to why I wasn't getting any sound out of a rat pedal
