Looking for subjective opinions on chorus pedal sounds…

So I just finished the Cephid chorus pedal, and it sounds great, but it’s not QUITE what I’m looking to put in my rig.

The Cephid (BOSS CE-1/2) sound I am now realizing has that thick, warm 70s/early 80s vibe that’s kinda “always on” and even at its most conservative setting verges on a flanger-ey thing. SO…

Can anyone recommend a kit from within the pedalpcb roster (or other reputable producers) that has a sound which is more like the Scholz/Rockman chorus sound? I’d describe it as quite a bit more “open”, or “transparent” if you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard it.

To me, even in mono, the effect is almost more like a spatial widening sound as compared to a blatant modulation effect.

There’s a lot of “NOTHING sounds like the Rockman chorus” lore out there—and I get that—but perhaps there’s a close second?

Am I making any sense here? Lookin’ for my next epic build….

Oh, lort, it’s another Spin FV-1 build…

Literally just yesterday ordered my first two pre-soldered forays into that world (an FV-1and a Spatialist) which I’ll embark upon once they hit my mailbox. Wish me luck.

+1 for this suggestion. Unison is what you’re after.

Just following up to say that I finished this build, and you guys’ recommendation of the Unison was SPOT ON. In “center switch mode” this thing just about nails that Rockman chorus thickening thing, and just sounds soooo big and lush. LOVE IT.

Just out of curiosity, when the pedalpcb website says of it, “The PedalPCB Unison Double Tracker replicates a classic studio effect”, is that in reference to any one particular box from back in the day?

I'm interested in hearing this if you're inclined to do a quick iPhone demo.
(Can't find any sound samples, and now I'm intrigued!)

Seconded! I’m curious
I'll try and get something like that done this weekend for sure!

FWIW I've been basically doing a spin-a-week for the last three weeks and I now also have the DMD-2 delay and the Spatialist Reverb done, and they ALL sound INCREDIBLE. Just vast, pristine tones, without being at all sterile, and super-quiet to boot.

I'm working towards my "squeaky-clean-80's-machine" (think Scholz Rockman "Clean 2" setting, a-la Def Leppard hysteria tones) with all this: five pedalpcb circuits rack mounted in a 1RU enclosure, also including a Thumb Sucker comp in front of the three spin units, and in front of all that right now is the Integral Preamp, with some modified caps on the hi/lo EQ.

The Integral will eventually be replaced with an old Rockman Acoustic Guitar Simulator preamps that @Robert is very kindly modifying for me to bypass the on/off circuitry—'cuz all these racked units will be switched on/off with a Voodoo labs HEX. The Intergral sounds really FAT and beautiful, but I'm actually going for something a little more anemic ;-)

When I get all this stuff presentable, I'll do a build report type thing with photos so you guys can see what mental illness looks like.

!!!!

This is REALLY GOOD to hear!

I've always assumed digital effects were out of reach, and that we DIY folk should stick to dirt boxes.

Been on the verge of blowing $200 on a Keeley 30ms. But it sounds like the Unison may be just as good or better for a fraction. 🤘
