MPB Degenerator [PT2399 delay w/ envelope modulation]

When I saw Madbean debuting new PT2399 offerings, my interest was piqued. I have a Zero Point SDX, built for me ages ago, and I love it, but it loves to break loose even without a SLAM. I'm sort of getting the hang of the "dwell" envelope modulation feature, though whenever I get a demo of it recorded, I'm curious if my Tayda-procured LM386L is doing what it should. I mean, on paper it has the same specs as the LM386-3 version… actually I went and relistened to KR Sound's demo again and the effect is MUCH smoother, so I'll look out for a proper one.

Regardless, I like this delay a lot. I love that I can really get that endless texture and dial it in with both mix and tone controls to right where I want it. I feel like KR Sound and I were on the same page as far as concepts go, so hope they don't mind if I share in the whole deconstruction / pixelation theme.

This is UV print on a Tayda gloss black 1590B. With some designs I debate on putting the varnish on either just the design elements, or over the whole face of it. This one I think it helps make it feel extra pixel-y by having it only on the printed bits.

I overshot the switch wire lengths, so they're a bit smooshed on this one : / Also, can you say "reused switch?" : P …rosin residue…ugh

I was struggling to find a single-source for the knurled (built-in-knob-kinda) 9mm pots, so though it doesn't show, the tone knob is actually has a 90˚ stop, which is serendipitously fitting for a tone knob, imo. They're also the taller versions than the ones spec'd in the build documentation, but I don't mind them. I actually kind of like them being taller, since they're proper controls and not trimmers or the like.

When I had it in a PLA enclosure for build and testing, I was getting this weird thing where the repeat would sort of reset itself, or just stop repeating altogether, and I wondered if I had yet another failed PT2399—had one in a Magdelay Bay (my "okay" Mag Echo take) for a friend go wrong on me. Turns out I had a cold joint on one of the legs. Don't remember the last time that happened, but got it sorted.

Fun fact: the typeface is the same one used on the classic Macintosh FPS series Marathon

I struggled with balancing the control naming and the graphic, but here were are… maybe it would've been better to omit the extra text, but I still like it.

Thanks for looking.

This is cool- I like your design better! I did mine in about 5 minutes without much thought. I gave it to a friend, but it makes some nice sounds and I especially like how it reacts to the strength of your picking.

That's a really beautiful design—everything about it works for me. I think the tall knobs are better than the really short ones—as you mention, these are controls you plan on using—to me the 1/4 inch tall, 1/4 inch diameter knobs are great as set and forget, but too hard to turn if you're trying to do anything else.

Very matrix like! I love it! Awesome build dude!
Thanks! I did a few palette swaps in the process. This was runner up, but the green just felt right. Probably for the reason you mention :D 1999 was a helluva movie year. I was also mucking around with varying the tints on the name, but I think I chickened out over contrast concerns.

Bonus points for using this expression correctly. I said this already but that design is tight af. Really diggin it
:D Thanks, yeah, I try to do my best with expressions, etc.. Speaking of, that's a peeve: "eCK settera" it's et, ET, ett, ette! And thanks to you and GotA/TWS for doubling up on the cross-forum praise!

this 👆💯 I couldn't agree more!
Thanks a bunch! Means a lot to have the star builders weighing in! I really mean that.

Thank you! Yeah, I really want to get that OG chip in there so much. Next order!

Wow! We are not worthy! Great pedal!
Oh man, thank you! I don't know about this pedestal you're putting me on, but thank you :)

Thank you! And totally; I think that's the same reason I tend to steer away from 1590A and other smaller enclosures—mostly because I have fat thumbs and need the space! I mean, an LPB-1 mini board? sure cram that into an A, but aside from engineering flex, which I totally respect, I need all the room I can get (without being wasteful) for a pedal with more controls.

Remember that you could solder your pots from the other side and spare the caps too for future reference
Yeah :/ I'm a bit of a sloppy solderer. I think doing the pots last… it's fear, tbh. Fear that no matter how scrupulously I line them up, my pots will be all wonky in the final enclosure.

There are lots of stars here but I sure ain't one of them. My family likes to remind me and got me this shirt for father's day last year and it reminds me I ain't shit and to stay humble 🙏🙌
bwahahahaaa! I need to get that cross-stitched and mounted over my workbench!

Nah man, you are totally a star in your work. It's unbelievable how clean your stuff is, and you've got an incredible theme going.

You couldn't of gone wrong with that other color palette though!
Yeah, it was a tough call. Not nearly as many revisions as this stinkin' phaser I've been dithering over for several months o_O
