I don't remember how I found PPCB. All I know is that I was at a pretty great party, and I went home, and the next thing I knew I woke up here...and Fig was there, and Chuck Bones, and Big Monk..and in the distance, a child laughing...
Actually, itt was sometime in the Summer of 2020...I decided to get into pedal building after putting it off for years (I never had the time!). The first pedal I built was the Twin Face, followed by an MK II Tonebender...though it was almost a Blue Box. I was always curious about this pedal, based entirely on the fact that Jimmy Page used one on Fool in the Rain. He did, too. There is a bit if controversy online (naturally) regarding if he even used one at all. He did. The basis of the argument is that the Blue Box creates an octave 2-steps down, and the tone in Fool in the Rain is one octave down. However, when running the pedal into OD (Catalinbread DLS), that double octave disappears, and there is now just a single octave down...just like the tune...
It's a fun pedal but it pretty much only does one thing, and that's it. Tons of fun to play around with, but not really all that practical. The build was super easy. Went with a pre-paint Tayda blue. I did the drilling myself because I didn't feel like finding the right coordinates for the Tayda Drill Service. I did notice paint chipping off when I started drilling pilot holes (pictured). I've never had that happen before. Not too big a deal, though. There is one valid complaint/observation: even with the level maxed the effect is a shade below unity. Sounds great boosting something else, though...
