Yes, looks like you'd have to desolder the gain-switch.
It's out of production, but I couldn't find a schematic.
Nonetheless, here's how I'd proceed:
Rehouse it in a slightly-larger enclosure to accommodate moving the jacks from the sides to the back and provide a little more room for the extra stomper that'll replace the toggle.
While slightly larger, your friend would still save pedalboard real-estate overall because there wouldn't be an extra enclosure (the remote) and no extra cabling that could go wrong.
I would hazard a guess that all the switch is doing is routing the gain through two different resistors, but I'd trace that part of the pedal to make sure. I bet it's a SPDT, so I'd use a DPDT stomper to add LED indication of "channel".
