Last of my “pre-sabbatical“ acquisitions. (I think…….
).
The only thing I can think of that’s still inbound is another Frenzel amp and a couple sets of pickups from Onamac Windery. Not that I don’t have more projects. I need to finish my Chibson whenever the pickups for it arrive.
And I’m going to need to re neck my 50’s burst strat. As gorgeous as the figured wood is on that neck the fret spacing is off and I can’t get completely intonated and it drives me nuts. But that’s another story.
THIS story is about the Squeir Classic Vibe bass that I got for a pretty darn decent price ($350) off Reverb.
Even though I’ve never owned a Mustang bass before I do actually have some history with it. My very first band with my best friends in 7th grade I was playing a Yamaha FG110 student guitar with a microphone down in the sound hole. This was before I got my first electric. This first person in our gang to get a “real” electric was my friend Bill, who’s dad got him an Olympic white Mustang bass. I remember lusting after that bass even though I wasn’tthe bass player in that band. (that would come in 8th grade when I got poached by another band hahaha).
Anyway, while I couldn’t justify buying one of the Fender versions, when Squeir came out with their vintage style Mustang bass I knew that sooner or later I would wind up with one. So here some 47 years later, I finally got my Mustang!!
I’ve been following the reviews of this bass on youtube and oddly enough there seems to have been some qc issues with these. And the general consensus is that the weakest component is the anemic pickup.
So I was rather surprised when I opened mine up today and found that it’s about as perfect as one can expect from Squeir. No issues whatsoever. Beautifully put together and it was still in tune out of the cardboard shipping box!
The seafoam green finish is gorgeous and the frets are very well dressed right out of the box. It was intonated perfectly and set up with great action. Even the nut was perfectly cut to the right slot depths. I literally have to do nothing to this guitar. (As picky and particular as I am.)
The electronics are standard Squeir fare and I’ll be rewiring the whole thing when I install the Nordstrand pickups got for this. I”m waiting for some pots to arrive.. I also ordered a set of Labella Flatwound strings.
One reviewer said that this bass excels with flats. I’m finding i quite like the rounds that it came with.
I‘ll be posting a demo of this when I get all the mods done. (And I think of something more interesting to play than 8th notes hahah).
Some cool figuring on the Indian Laurel fingerboard.
