Now Playing... What are you Listening to Right Now?

My 16yo and I had just bonded over Massive Attack's "Man Next Door," and for whatever reason the song was stuck in my head all day Tuesday. So now it's got that layer on it. Perhaps unwisely, I chose to binge a little--and happened on this version. It captures the feeling.

 
Threw on one of my favorite Elvis Costello albums today. Also happens to be one of the more expensive individual records I own. Glad I picked it up a long time ago. Had the song "Tart" in my head all day today so had to give this one a spin.

Had a new grotto being carved out in my mind over the last two years, celebrating a handful of hiphop artists. I discarded the genre almost entirely for the first four decades of my life, but, as with every genre, getting to the meaningful stuff takes some hand-holding, some blind jumps. Some rocks were hit, but it was worthb it! What I've learned from this genre is that allowing yourself to drift through these dense wordy waters, with music taking the backseat, is sometimes very, very welcome! A weary mind often turns my usual diet of extreme industrial and metal into meaningless mush, but words on voices? The mind tunes into it, allowing the body to go automatic without effort.

(I've been listening to basically everything produced by Blue Sky Black Death / Televangel, among a few other things)

This track has been lifting me up over the last week. Helped me disconnect from the body when I needed it; let my mind drift until it was time to "be there" again.

If you haven’t heard Grace Bowers yet, you’re missing out. She’s still young and unrefined, but when she gets it together, she’s going to break out. Some of her solos remind me of what an engineer told Vince Gill. Let’s do another take, this time only play half of everything you know.
