Now Playing... What are you Listening to Right Now?

hahaha thats funny. I only discovered the rest of the album after Mississippi Queen about 10 years ago. I had the exact opposite reaction to the songs. They struck as timeless and existing in a space of their own. They are really unique songs with compelling song writing. when you add the fantastic musicianship on top of that, you get something truly special. the vocals are the only thing that really strongly indicate the era it came from for me.

I can't stop listening to this song.
The chorus kills me every single time - Michael McDonald! - and then Larry Carlton's solo is one of the strongest guitar statements I've ever heard. The guitar tone is ridiculous. Uncle Larry brought me here.

This track (‘I dreamt of you’ from Jimmy Haslip’s Arc, in case the link doesn’t work) has been haunting me in the last few days. It’s composed by Vince Mendoza with this weirdly ambiguous bass melody. Sco takes over for the second section where it briefly settles down into a clear key centre. It’s so clearly Sco’s sound and lines, but Jimmy’s bass solo toward the end takes out IMHO.

I’ve been lucky enough to see each of them live. Sco with Herbie et al in London remains a lifelong highlight. He was risk-taking to the point of one thinking ‘Man, how’s he going to get out of this particular painted corner?’ Then he’d pull the proverbial rabbit out of his magic hat and cue the band (with Dave Holland, Jack deJohnette et al.) back to safety. Unforgettable stuff.

Kevin Rowland is an incredible talent, it goes without saying.
That said, this is the funniest shit ever, and I can’t help but listen to it every few months when I need a laugh.
