Back to the MIAB series, I needed something quick and easy today as I didn't have a lot of "hobby" time available to me.
Plus, I already had a 3 knob layout enclosure drilled. Actually it was one of my "borked" enclosures that got patched and repainted waiting for a project.
So, the Paradise fit the bill in all ways. Super easy build. Like, 15 minutes worth of soldering, super low parts count.
I was pretty floored by the huge sound though....I wasn't expecting it. There are no clipping diodes in this pedal, it's all driven off the LM386.
Funny how sometimes the simplest circuit designs can have such a big complex sound.
Out of all my MIAB's I've built, in my build report I usually say something like..."Sounds great but doesn't really sound like a (fill in Marshall amp) to me"
Well, this pedal sounds great.........and....it DOES kinda sound a bit like a Silver Jubilee to me....which is a first! Hahah...
I don't have a ton experience with the Silver Jubilee series of amps from Marshall but the pedal has some of that crunch and gain structure (to me).
It's a pretty "amp-like" sounding pedal, in that it's big and beefy and throws a big soundstage. Like most MIAB's it's a bit on the bassy side and the tone control is somewhat limited in what it can do. Enter the Mercurial Boost!...perfect application for this pedal to manage the bass and boost the upper mid-range a bit.
I'm really digging this pedal a lot more than I thought I would and I love the simplicity of it. Great easy build for big Marshall sound!
As mentioned above, this was a patched enclosure that got repainted with the "black textured' rattle can paint I got. I like this paint, it covers well and dries fast.
But would like find something in a more semi-gloss or flat, textured black.
These knobs were the latest batch from Tayda. They look horrible, not sure what happened, but the lines are a mess. It looks like it was colored in with a fat black sharpie by a drunk monkey. I don't know if it's a new supplier or what, I need to go look through my box of knobs at the other MXR style ones I got.
