Sell it all, no really!

You ever think of selling like all the pedals you have or built? I'm going thru this again 😂 only this time I'm considering selling all but a few of my EHX collection, that's 30 plus pedals. Hard to build stuff in there for sure, well hard for other people. I'm not looking to be talked out of it either, I wanna know what you all go thru even with the stuff that's good and you like, how often do you consider cleaning house and starting from scratch?

Full disclosure, the pedals I'm considering selling are some of the best work I've ever done, a true labor of love. But many, if not most, sit unused and that bothers me. The thrill of the complete collection was fun while it lasted, but the hunt is over. I have a lot of stuff that's not in my wheelhouse and I'd like people to use them.

But I know I don't want it now 😭 I don't have fomo, I enjoy jomo 😂
I’ve been gifting many of them. I sent along a few fuzzes I made for a friend’s band to try out and they ended up buying all 6. So that’s kinda cool. More money to build more of what I like.
Ideally making a small profit would be the goal, to put into something that would get used more

If you sell them on eBay and use the money to build more, you can claim the income as 'hobby' income, which still needs to be reported to the IRS but is in a different category. My wife (rip) was the tax expert, I think it's non taxable. As I look at the IRS website my eyes glaze over, but it's something to think about, if you file taxes.

Sorry for your loss!

That's really good to know. I wonder how much I have to show that it all went back into the hobby. More to consider. Condolences on your wife.

Thanks, loosing her was awful. Stupid covid. It's going on 2 years now, I'm almost back to normal. 40 years with the same girl.

A call to your tax preparer or just HR Block could answer your question. Most don't require payment for advice on the hopes to get you as a yearly client.

Being a builder can be weird.
Multiple times I've set practical goals for myself based on what I need as a guitarist, but once those goals are met, I'm still a damn builder.
Now I'm stuck with my ridiculous setup that's proprietary to only me because I can't really stop building..

For many reasons, I've never been interested in selling stuff. Of course I've given a few away to friends who didn't want to give them back and done a couple commissions of hard-to-find circuits for the same crowd but the vast majority of them are hanging out in my music room for others to try out when they come to jam.

I recently sold a few pedals to raise funds for a synth. I didn't enjoy it. It's a bummer having people kick the tires or low balling.

I have done custom builds for money for people and that worked out fine. Also enjoy giving pedals to or selling them on the cheap to friends.

A few thoughts:
  • Before you sell anything with hard to find parts or that would otherwise be difficult to rebuild should you choose to in the future, challenge yourself to write a song around it or feature it in a song you’re recording (since I know you’ve been itching to get your AOR album going), and *then* decide if it’s still something you won’t use much and would rather get rid of
  • In lieu of selling certain pedals, see if any musicians you’re a fan of would be interested in any of them— you might be able to turn a pedal or two into a few tickets for a fun night out for you and your wife (Christopher Cross is a known gearhead 👀👀👀)
  • Whatever you do sell, post here first 😍

Don't worry, your first on the list of people I'd let the frequency analyzer go to. No one, and I mean NO ONE, would appreciate it and use it like you😉
