Sell it all, no really!

Lame shoppers is part of selling šŸ˜‘
I have very strict and snobbish boundaries with my shoppers and I have no problem telling them there’s no soup for them. At the end of the day I think it works in my advantage. Some people like being put in their place and will pay top dollar for it. šŸ˜Ž. No demos, nothing custom unless they’re a long time customer and don’t ask me how it compares to this, that, the other, and whatever.

The spring clean out effect is real. Every year around this time I get the urge to clear out and have a new beginning. Not just pedals, although the last few years have been pedal mania for me. It took me that long to find the tones that were in my head. I’ve pretty much saturated my friends with pedals at this point and I’m no longer interested in the reverb game for my own builds. I have about ten that need to go, shoe boxed, never play, duplicates. You know the story. I would never sell my faves, but totally understand the wish to clear out and start fresh. I’ve really wanted to build the last few months but it’s hard to find anything to get hyped about since I’m totally satisfied for the first time in years with my rig. I’ve been diving down the synth world but have yet to pull the trigger on any DIY stuff yet. I think about building more tube stuff. I like @jjjimi84 all in one box, and thought it would be fun to make one of those. But yeah man, if you need to clear house it makes sense. But don’t sell the stuff you love, you will just end up rebuilding it again. You should have no issues clearing out. Your stuff is always super clean.

What ever you guys do, don’t learn eagle. Ooh I can try that, and that and…ooohhhh I’ve always wanted to try that. I am absolutely covered up with builds from the last 10 years. I don’t like selling them, I’d rather give them to friends.

I think I have one of your builds on my bench for repairs…

jk😘

NOPE!
All accounted for :poop:

*I know this is a weird flex, but in my defense- I haven't had to add anything to the 'BOX OF SHAME' in a long, long time!

I say sell them off. If they’re just sitting around collecting dust why hang onto them. I sold off just about all of my builds and for me, it was liberating. I no longer see a shelf full of unused shit and think ā€œUgh. What a waste.ā€
I’d probably as bricks suggested hang on to anything that parts are going to be a huge pain to get and list em. Just make sure you are getting what they are worth. You’ve got some awesome looking builds. Maybe get yourself a new guitar or amp from the proceeds. None of us need 5 phasers, 4 analog delays and 15 overdrives. As much as we think we do.

15 is just my "transparent" section of overdrives #lordofthemids

My thought in the mere 10min of play time I had today was ā€œfuck, all these pedals sound like shit (And those were even some of my so called ā€œdesert islandā€ picks). And as I looked to the right and left of where I stood I couldn’t quit the nagging feeling of ā€œwhy the hell do I keep doing this!?ā€. Every so often I pull one from the heap and get inspired by a new sound, but it’s rarely enough to displace my usual suspects. So fuck it, sell ā€˜em.

A few thoughts:
  • Before you sell anything with hard to find parts or that would otherwise be difficult to rebuild should you choose to in the future, challenge yourself to write a song around it or feature it in a song you’re recording (since I know you’ve been itching to get your AOR album going), and *then* decide if it’s still something you won’t use much and would rather get rid of
  • In lieu of selling certain pedals, see if any musicians you’re a fan of would be interested in any of them— you might be able to turn a pedal or two into a few tickets for a fun night out for you and your wife (Christopher Cross is a known gearhead šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€)
  • Whatever you do sell, post here first šŸ˜
Agree with point 1. I have used a Schaller Fuzz Wah in a song. When I sold it I had no regrets because I have a recording to remember it by. It also serves as a reminder that no matter how much tone suck a pedal can have, it will always sound great in a recording if you like the song and if it's mixed well enough. Which means, maybe keep your gear around, you might find a way to use it after all.
