I'm looking for ways to stremline my workflow. Not that I do any kind of production work but seeing how others have their work benches configured would likely give me some ideas.
Well, since this is a new hobby amongst my many hobbies... Almost everything's stored in a couple of large compartimental boxes (more have been purchased ). I pull them out from wherever I still had some space left, and open them all up on my bed, then use my desk in front of a window with lively view, next to my bed. Everything needs to be cleared as I use this desk for everything: eating, reading, setting up music gear. It's small, but also dirt cheap. So all that setting up and breaking down comes with the upside of being able to have a lot to spend. Also, I made room on some shelf for project-sorting and some larger tools.
Edit: Now, with daylight. I forgot this corner where the iron stands (a weird magnastat with added temp control). Also showing the antique bakelite fan that needs its coils rewound after its lubrication burned out. No idea how to proceed with that at the moment, but it's something I'll be learning at some point in my life. The blue plastic enclosure and handle from the Weller will eventually be replaced with wood. God, I hate the look and feel of plastic.
My workbench, crammed into my basement - small but capable.
The workbench itself is quite solid, and has height adjustment.
I added the shelves to better 'organize' what had been a dumpster heap.
Electronic parts are stored elsewhere, jammed next to the basement steps, lol.
Little messier than usual.
Homebuilt with a commercial door as the top. Could set a V8 on it if I wanted.
Hardware on the left, pots, knobs, enclosures on top shelf.
Store most of my components below in binders and card sleves:
Resistors will eventually go into the mini-files on the left. Need to find appropriate envelopes or small boxes.
All in all, everything within arms reachn without dropping hundreds on organizers.
Edit, intended to get rid of the little bins on the bottom shell or reutilize them. Just need to spend the time to figure it out.
Oh, and test lead holder/cable organizer on the end was a nice add on.
Have some disc neodymiums stuck to it to keep them from being dislodged easily.
This is the desk I work from. In the evenings and weekends if I don’t feel burned out from being there too long it’s also where I build pedals and play guitar. My parts are in boxes and binders in the left filing cabinet and projects in working on are in the cardboard boxes to the right.
This post came at an interesting time for me. I have been at this spot for about 5 years. Things have not been bad in my life but they have felt a little stuck my girlfriend and I have worked hard and been saving for about 6-7 years now and a few weeks ago we got an offer accepted on our first house together.
At the new spot I am going to make my work desk into a work only desk and probably use this one only for hobbies moving forward. I could put parts organizers for days on the top shelf.
I tidied up recently. Bought a used Ikea cubby hole thing from the classifieds for $50. I thought look how much I saved! Then proceeded to fill it up with $250 worth of new accessories from Ikea lol
