Snowed under

I’m on the west coast, on an island. I’m still in shorts (but I am that guy). Good luck my friends, stay safe.
I thought you were in Kanuckistan?

Helped where I could today. Exhausted. Still no power. 144k still without Family all asleep in the basement around the stove. Some reports showing us getting up near freezing tomorrow which would be huge for people getting help and linemen getting to down lines.
Not funny but funny story my wife saw on InstaFaceWitter. In neighboring White House, about 20 minutes NE, linemen had just replaced a pole broken in the storms. As they were, a truck lost control and hit an adjacent pole, snapping it in two.
That's one of the big differences down here vs up north, among many other things. There's no shortage of dumbasses in big trucks that think Newton's first law of motion doesn't apply to them.

And on the other side of the planet... Where my brother lives (3500km away) in Melbourne it's been crazy hot - mid-40sC. Further north in Victoria temperatures reached 49.5C. That is scary! Global warming is here folks. Victoria is in the south of Australia.

The weird thing is that rising temperatures might actually make Britain colder by knocking out the gulf stream. Warm water circulating around the gulf of MEXICO goes up the Atlantic and around Britain, keeping it warmer than it should be given the latitude. If the gulf stream is affected by warming oceans Britain will freeze. Where I am on the west coast of Australia this week is beautiful - mid 20sC with an afternoon sea breeze. But it will definitely warm up soon.

In Central Texas, we didn't get snow but we got a ton of ice and didn't lose any power, yet, so maybe ERCOT is doing their job this year unlike 2021.

Got pretty cold for a while but Chicago got spared anything too crazy. We've been pretty lucky most years as the nasty stuff stays north or south of us but screws over folks in that path. I'm down with a nasty bit of flu since Sunday night. Not sure if the flu shot helped at all but imagine I'll be back to work tomorrow.

Mean while timberline at 6000 ft on the side of mt. Hood (they filmed parts of the shining there) was 50 degrees the other day.

That lasted about 16 hours
Whole neighborhood went dark again several hours ago.
It's only hitting 22F tonight but not above freezing until Monday with some single digit lows.

The damage from this storm is pretty similar to when we get tornadic weather. Not quite ripping roofs off but so many down trees and power lines.

You guys ok with power? I hear it's the worst outage on record up there.

No, we got lucky this time. But, we've got half a tree down in our backyard. We have like six 50 ft tall pines there that are always on the cusp of disaster.

Yeah. I've been around Nashville some the last 2 days. Still no traffic lights on west end through Belle Meade. A lot of old growth trees down. Lines still down over residential streets.

Rhodes last year hit a nice 37degC (~100degF) in the shade whilst we visited. The year before they had masses of wildfires so large areas so there was less risk but they'd not got the winter water to fill the reservoirs they need to tide them over. Same with other mediterranean islands.

(the 'scorchio' is a running joke as the entire sketch series has the same weather forecast until the last ever episode when a cloud appears and chaos breaks out in the studio, her name 'fisch' is also referencing a well known weather man in the UK https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Fish who famously down played a hurricane that hit the UK)

Yep, the UK is about 750 miles north of NYC in latitude terms (actually Rome is closer to NYC). In fact London matches Calgary in latitude. Scotland is within 1 degree latitude south of Anchorage!

If the gold stream packs up, the UK would have to adapt to Canadian climates, the ecosystems would suffer as most wild life will not be able to migrate south due to the channel.

Having said that the UK is getting Tuna being caught off the south east coast so we're likely to see a warm up first, then the change in the temperature differential will change both the Gulf Stream flow and the salinity of the surrounding seas and the northern seas.

We did actually get about 2 inches of snow here in the south of the UK - that lasted about a day. Weather warnings of storm winds with rain with hard frosts over the last few weeks.

Hoky crappicola blattman... 49.5ºC!

The hottest I've experienced is ... 45ºC.

For you metrically challenged people, 49.5ºC = 121ºF.

Stay cool HamishR.

Everyone else, just about, stay warm!
The hottest my backyard has been is 123°F.

It was in the low 80s today. I’m about 15 minutes away from Santa Monica Beach.

And Nice in the south of France is a similar latitude to Hokkaido in Japan! Somewhat different climates..

I live couple hundred km to south from artic circle and permantent snow came start of this year. Seems like every year snow appears later and it comes and goes (melts) few times before spring, BUT this winter has really surprised me with proper freeze. It’s been around -20 celsius degree or more for three weeks in a row and enough snow against polar nights/everlasting darkness which luckily eases evert day.

Are you in Norway or Sweden?

Today in the northeastern US it's currently 2F, or -16.5C. After tomorrow it should warm up to just below freezing

Do they clear the snow off the roads to cement or do you drive on snowpack?
