Tempted by a retail pedal.......first in a long time......

I love compressors for recording but can't bear to play through them. I get all the compression I need from a light overdrive.

I like it when my guitar gets louder if I hit it harder.
That's exactly where I am too. I always use a little compression via a plugin when recording or mixing but have never liked a single compressor pedal in front of an amp.

The closest thing I have to an always on peddle is my Effectrode Leveling Amp. I use it with the compression barely on. It adds a sweetness and clarity, a round harmonic smoothness, to anything I plug into it. Its off when I want a simpler tone. It also tends to make my mod pedals more intense sounding—at first I thought this was an effect of having the buffer there, but even when I have other pedals in between the LA-1A and the mod pedal, the change in intensity is still there.

The Tso is in the same style, and I prefer it to the Origin units I’ve tried. I think the last pedal I bought was the Unit 67, which has only minimal compressor controls, but if I was going somewhere and only wanted to take one pedal with me, there’s a good chance it would be that one. (I love the voicing on the boost, and the way the controls interact. If I were still buying pedals, I’d want to sample more of Drybell’s designs.)

@MichaelW Do it!!!! Then shoot a big compressor shoot out

THe Origin Effects Dual 1176 looks dynamite but the price is hard to justify when I can build one of these for a bit more..

I have been long tempted to build a couple 1176s for the studio.
Damn! That Linkwitz box could take me down a really long rabbit hole! I’ve been interested in his speakers for years, but didn’t want all of the additional ADA involved. Not to say that I wouldn’t be thrilled by any of their projects. If I only started recording more, I could possibly justify some of those kits!

Actually I just listened to the Andertons demos of these new UA pedals and I have to admit to being quite impressed with the UA 1176. It's the first time I could see how using a compressor on guitar might be something I could use. I think for a Strat it could be very useful. My Les Paul already sounds like it has the worlds best compressor on it anyway.

I used to work in a guitar store showing things like Boss compressors to people and being so horrified at what they sounded like! But the UA compressor sounded nothing like that to me.

For the money, I think the Source Audio Atlas would be a better choice. Granted, it's 100% digital...but it does a fantastic job of emulating a classic limiter compressor and then some. Very, very powerful pedal under the hood once you start diving into the software. :D
