Last year Catalinbread dropped their 2 different DIY kits for like $100, and of course the NotAKontroversy JHS Notaklon NotARealKit dropped a few months ago, and now this from Third Man. Is this going to be a new trend?
Not sure how I feel about it- on one hand I like seeing more builders, on the other I don’t want to see happen what did when folks got on the amp building kick in the early 2000s.

What happened when people started building amps? Electrocutions? Solder burns? Bum tone?
The personal downside (as well as a few other legit professional builders had the same)- since we didn’t have the notoriety of folks like Voodoo Amps, Victoria and others, the number of “companies” that shot up overnight (mind you I started professionally in the mid-late 90s) completely undermined any confidence in our legit businesses (and years of experience).
On the upside, we did get a lot of business undoing the messes caused by some of these newbies.

The biggest downside though was the number of vintage, collectible and amazing amps that now had extra holes and fried original transformers was a blow to the music community as a whole.

Furthermore forums were filled with people barely able to hold the right end of a soldering iron passing off wrong, damaging and even dangerous advice to folks, again undercutting those with more experience. Sadly it drove away the folks that had even more experience (some rather big/famous names) than myself that I looked up to as mentors (we can never learn enough!!)

Sounds like every Facebook pedalbuilding group ever only that next to the people who have no idea what they are doing you also have a bunch of know-it-alls who will not answer your question, but give you homework and riddles as well as the ones who only ever simulate circuits but seemingly never build one. And the ones ignoring all advice and basically asking variations of the same questions anew every second day.

Oh that. Yea, I see your point.

Amp facebook groups are: regardless of the problem- replace the filter caps, roll tubes. Even if the question is “my pilot light burned out” … answer “bet its filter caps”. Lol
