Weird Tayda pot experience

Perhaps I should stress that when I say pot I mean potentiometer... Anyway I recently built myself an overdrive using an A100K Tayda 16mm pot. While testing it seemed to me that the gain was lower than it should have been, judging by the position of the knob. This was an overdrive I have built a few times before, so I know where the action is! So I tried turning the knob up and down. At around 3.00 all of a sudden the gain leapt to very high levels - it was almost as if at 3.00 I had flicked a switch. So I removed the pot and put my meter on pins 1 and 2. As I turned the pot it gave fairly predictable results but seemed more linear than logarithmic. Then at 3/4 the way up it suddenly measured 180K! I've never had this happen on any pot of any brand before. I must have used hundreds of pots.

So I replaced it with another Tayda A100K and it works as it should. I'm tempted to open it up and see what is going on inside the dud.
