What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Putting together that FranTone Cream Puff/Pie Fuzz. Gotta get some pink knobs to make it complete.

I also tried to resistorize the 250Ks into 100Ks, and it’s a bit weird maybe. I might try something else.

Can I go from 1-3 with a B, or do I still need to connect 1-2 and 2-3?

Might throw together a simple Belton Brick ‘verb today, since it’s the only thing I have parts for. I’m reeeeeeally itching to place a Tayda order, but these enclosure designs are taking a bit longer than expected
Threw it together a little while ago, and it isn’t working so now I have to troubleshoot tomorrow 😩😩😩

Anyone have experience with a BDTR-1 Belton brick producing a harsh, fuzzy oscillation at a steady pitch instead of passing a reverberated version of the input signal?

I drew up this veroboard FX Loop and just verified it. I installed it in the above posted amp. This amp was sloppily drilled (go Lee), the reason the jacks are loose. Board is 2-1/4 X 1-1/16 so it can fit. I used plastic sticky standoffs which fit a 3mm hole. Amp people, enjoy. IMG_2414x2000.JPG

I was gonna rewire my Jazzmaster today. Unfortunately the Switchcraft slider switch was supplied without mounting screws (because of course it wasn't) and the screws that held the stock switch don't fit the threads. It's probably in inches. Finding specialty imperial screws in Poland is my favorite pastime.

What the hell am I supposed to do now? I know, spend hours cleaning up the mess and reuse the stock switch, if I can. It's all caked in old solder.

It's 2023 world, let's pick one measurement system and let's get on with our lives :)

On second thought, I think I'll just throw the whole guitar in the trash in a fit of rage, burn the whole neighborhood down and be done with it.

I just wish the whole world would just go metric. I'm in the construction industry and I HATE HATE HATE imperial measurements. DUMB DUMB DUMB

The Jazzmaster is done. Total debacle.

  1. The Switchcraft pickup selector has a ton of jiggle in the middle position, with associated noise. 23 euros for this crap.
  2. The Fender 1M Linear pot also jiggles and it makes mechanical noise. It really feels bad to turn. It's one of those low resistance jobs. Paid 12 euros or so.
  3. I added a treble bleed (1n in parallel with 150k) and it preserves the treble well but the volume knob barely does anything now. I read that this type of treble bleed can make the taper even less gradual. Son of a bitch!
  4. Turns out the stock tone pot (Alpha) was indeed audio but it acted like a switch. The new one is a CTS and it works a bit better but it's still not enough. I'm used to my Strat and its 100nF cap. Really hard to turn too.
  5. Alpha pots feel so much better, at a fraction of the cost.
  6. I like pushback cloth wire in guitars.
  7. I disconnected the rhythm circuit (useless to me) and wired the slider as a phase switch for the neck pickup. It doesn't sound as expected. In my Strat with flats it's a nice thin and nasal tone with a lot of bite. It turns a woofy Fuzz Face into a chainsaw. In the Jazzmaster with rounds no so much. Nice to have the color but I was expecting more personality.
  8. Most importantly, my soldering is pure unadulterated garbage. I'm sure the Pinecil and my tiny work space didn't help but come on, I couldn' t even get the solder to stick to the back of the pots. Yes, I used flux and sanded the pots a bit.
  9. The Pinecil is only good for PCBs. I've had trouble with everything else.
  10. A bad workman always blames his tool and is probably a tool himself.
Having said that, the guitar sounds amazing but it's a pain to use with all the issues.

Sorry for the rant.

Working on a custom 2-footswitch distortion and boost in a 1590BB2 for a client, using the BE-OD circuit and the Tiger Boost. There's something appealing to me about 1590BB format pedals in portrait orientation, I may build more like this down the track.

I'm on board for making things make sense, and the metric 10-base does a pretty good job of it:

10mm=1cm, 10cm=1dm, 10dm=1m, 10m=1dam (dekametre), 10dam=1hm (hectometre), 10hm=1km

Makes sense to my mathematically-challenged mind. 🧠🔣⁉️

✝️Latin prefixes for units smaller than a metre:

Deci- means 10; 10 decimetres make a metre.
Centi- means 100; 100 centimetres make a metre.
Milli- means 1,000; 1,000 millimetres make a metre.

🎭Greek prefixes for units larger than a metre:

Deka- means 10; a dekametre is 10 metres.
Hecto- means 100; a hectometre is 100 metres.
Kilo- means 1,000; a kilometre is 1,000 metres.

Alas for homebrewtj, in the construction industry the imperial system is well-entrenched. Canada has been metric since... 1976? *Internet search* ...
No, 1975 on April Fool's day 🤡 (a dubious day to start IMO), Canadian weather reports were given in Celsius. 🌡️
At -40º, it doesn't matter whether it's measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius. 🥶

Anyway, metric's been in use in Canada for nearly a half-century and the construction industry still uses "board-feet" of "2x4"s for studs that are 16" apart... etc. 🧰🔨🪚

I'm a victim survivor of that changeover and while I prefer Celsius now I still prefer 0-60mph 🏎️, 🚦quarter-mile times 🏁, and MPG ⛽ — I guess 0-100km/h isn't too bad, I can wrap my brain around that, but... 1/4-km times is nuts as is LITRES/KM 🤪; but travel-distances in km are okay, too. After 5 decades, my brain is still stuck between the two systems.

The US 🇺🇲, Libya Liberia 🇱🇷 and Myanmar 🇲🇲 are the only holdouts for imperial measurements, and even then the US throws a ⚾ curveball with its own version of gallons, where a US-gallon 🛢️ is about 20% smaller than an imperial gallon 🛢️, and other otherwise-imperial units such as tonnage ⚖️ (imperial-ton 2,240 lbs vs US-ton 2,000 lbs) etc... 🤔

Niggling details:
— A "meter" is a device used to measure something. :dmm:
— A "metre" is a unit of measurement. 📏
😸

Let's not even talk about "⏳🌇daylight saving time🌃⌛" ...
