What are the pedals every guitarist must have?

I’d say the Boss BD-2 isn’t necessarily a must have but a rite of passage.
"Rite of passage pedals," I like that one. What pedals would that be?
TS9 BD2 SD1 Big Muff, Proco Rat, and more recent Bluesbreaker, and Timmy?
I must admit I only had a TS9 ones.
I had a WH10 in the early 90's but never tried the Cry Baby. Maybe the Phase90 is one too?

Get a good amp that has the dirt characteristic you like. You won't need 90%+ of the pedals you make.
Definitely.

Pedals are more like toys. They're fun to play with, but not required.

An amp however, is required. An electric guitar by itself is not a complete instrument- the amp is the other half. Yes of course an amp sim counts, or your preamp pedal + power amp pedal counts. That's your amp.

One way you can explore pedals without building a ton of them is bread boarding. Mr. Buddy above me has a great set of tutorials in The Test Kitchen sub-forum.
