what does this diode do?

On the 5lb fuzz D2 called for a 1n34a. I only had a 1N1418, 1N270, and a BAT46. I tried them all (even no diode) and there was no change in sound or feel. Will a 1n34a make a big difference? Thank you.

That specific diode simply adds another 0.38V of Fvd to the clipping elements at that position. A 1N4148 (there is no 1N1418 diode) will add 0.7V of Vfd. The difference will hardly be audible. The 1N34A will not change it enough to really a difference. (IMO) Some might be able to detect a slight difference in harmonic content, but not many would.
