Youtube disclosure

For guitar stuff:

I normally listen to the Philip Mcknight Know Your Gear podcast on fridays.

Jeff McErlain when he uploads. (I like his teaching style)
Five Watt World sometimes.
Jeremy Sheppard once in a while.
Some Tim Pierce.

I like some Marty Music stuff.

I catch Rhett Shull or Music is Win if I think it is interesting.

I have been cutting back on the guitar/music content.

Keith Williams went on Ask Zac a while back and said he had three of those identical denim shirts

I never understood why people bitch about Beato bitching about being blocked. Isn't it an issue when music can't be used to teach? And is it bad if the teacher indirectly makes money from teaching? Isn't that fair use ?

I have no issue with someone selling their products on their YouTube channel that I choose to watch. I get content in return for the ads and I knew that going in.
I've gotten so much "free" knowledge and entertainment from some YouTubers it's not even funny.

Additionally, I'm always happy when a YouTuber doesn't use Patreon.

I don’t mind Beato, though I dont watch him. All that theory takes the fun out of music. I don’t trust him as a producer. He came up in the age when everything started sounding the same…with the super compressed and loud drums, loud/quiet/loud, etc. Shinedown ain’t know for being studio masters…

I agree that it’s great when music is used for teaching, but a big reason why Beato isn’t fair use is that he’s effectively using the music to sell a product. Nearly all of his videos have an extended commercial for Beato book, with discount codes and links to buy it. His videos are selling a product, and that turns the songs in his videos into free advertising in a sense. Also he does have a patreon, and he advertises it in the same videos. Likewise, he frequently complains about how a video will “probably get demonetized” which means he has them set up to be monetized to begin with— you can turn off monetization on individual uploads. All of that negates a fair use argument, and it’s very clear- any lawyer could tell him that, as could 20 minutes reading what constitutes fair use. Instead he plays the victim card and feigns ignorance. His entire career is built off getting clicks off of other people’s work, and he knows it— he’s not the martyr he acts as.

Beato has other issues, such as the weird exploitation of loved ones (there have been plenty of criticisms of his video’s featuring his young son, and later an unhinged rant on a patreon stream about forcing the kid to do music when he’s interested in sports; there have also been videos about the death of friends/mentors where he spent the next week on Instagram bragging about how many views it got– there was a little spat that he had with Dovydas about that, which you may be able to find), his tendency to block anyone slightly critical or corrective of his content, stories of unsavory interactions in public Facebook groups, his history of fighting legitimate fair use cases of his Beato book being featured in non-profit educational content, and probably most egregiously, the fact that his Beato Book that he constantly promotes is absolutely filled with basic errors and suspected plagiarism.

This is of course a thread about positive YouTube experiences though, so I’ll refrain from any more comments on the matter, but since you asked, I thought I’d share the main issues I’ve seen frequently brought up on the matter.

I don’t doubt any of that stuff about Beato and I personally don’t care either way about him (the only content of his I remember enjoying were the Julian Lage and Keith Jarrett interviews).

But I do wonder about how to draw the line regarding fair use for educational purpose. YouTubers are there to make a living and sometimes they are teachers or at least try to teach some concepts. You could argue that any use of other people’s music, even when used for teaching, is ultimately used for profit since the YouTubers will make ads money from YouTube, at least. Does that mean no use is fair use given the nature of the platform? I hesitate to draw the line so far. I agree that it’s probably not fair use if you are trying to sell books or online courses. Maybe I wouldn’t lump promoting Patreon into that (again, YouTubers gotta eat!). It’s a big gray area in my opinion. It’s hard to navigate and it sucks that ultimately we (the “consumers”) suffer because most YT teachers won’t make lessons about music that will demonetize their videos.

Anyway, sorry for derailing!

Anyone here actually have a Beato Book? I'm curious because music theory books to me are their own brand of academia scam. They put out new versions of the texts used in universities constantly. Not because there's been "breakthroughs in theoretical musicing" but to make the now obsolete edition in the used bin less desirable than a freshly printed one. What great knowledge does Rick have to offer on the subject that can't be found everywhere else?

This. I work in Academia, and 99% of the the time texts are updated to students won’t be able to buy the book used. After a few years used book prices drop big time. All they’ll change is the cover and add a new preface with tips on how to write essays…

No, but I ordered a Rhett Shull thing once out of curiosity. It was fine. I learned the same stuff 30+ years ago from my guitar teacher.

I was lent a printout of it for a while. It's filled with errors and typos, and seems like a rush job meant to make money quick. I doubt anyone proofread it.

None really. If there are any topics you have particular interest in, I can recommend good free resources
