What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I do the same thing. Cloth pushback wire, CTS pots and a nice non circuit board mechanical switch. Oh, and of course orange drop caps. It may not sound different, but I know it’s there.
Definitely. Doing the same to the Tele at the same time. I’m going to put a 4-way switch in it this time and got a cool control plate for an angled switch. Looking forward to not accidentally hitting that mushy switch.

Got my 12 string strung up. I managed to get the action at the 12th fret down to 1.5mm. it had been at 3.5mm so that's a big improvement. I put much lighter strings on too, and now it's super easy to play and the neck is dead straight.

This is the lightest 12 string set I could find and so far I really like em

I finally gave in and started to work on an actual pedal, just to have a more convenient development platform for my Rockman not-a-clone. I normally install it onboard, but it's quite a chore pulling it out, modding it and putting it back in every time I want to try something. Currently on the bench is a mechanical mock-up, to see if I can get everything to fit into a 1590B (!). Quite a challenge, since I'll eventually have at least six 9mm pots, three 1/4" and two 1/8" jacks, a DC jack, 9V battery, and I'm thinking of stuffing 2 or maybe even 3 really-low-profile stomp switches in there too -- and no wires except maybe for the battery clip.

Winter is long in Canada. This ought to keep me busy...

Finally nearly done with my DIY bass amp preamp board retrofit, the two boards at bottom right:

PW8Bv1_1.PNG

Still one or two ghosts in the machine, but it works well enough to hear that I'm on the right track with this set of mods. Finding the documentation on the ~7 year old preamp boards was interesting, but I managed to scare up most of what I needed eventually. This amp was originally optimized for my electric upright but this time around it's set up more with my five string fretted one in mind.

The ring light is incoming...it's not the electron type I wanted but it'll do

Below that is the Thornrock T60 circuit WIP posted by @Chuck D. Bones . There will be jumper wires!

Shin Ei Companion Fuzz FY-2. This damn breadboard is tight, had to use pliers to stick the components in. Took forever.

Those are 2N5088s with a gain of 458, stock circuit with B50k for fuzz and A50k for volume. The Fuzz knob is pretty useless, it's an ineffective tone control. Maxed out it's below unity, common issue with this circuit. So the volume knob is also useless.
I got it to sound very close to this:

Apparently these are voltages from an original unit:

FY-2 voltages.png

Mine:
  • Q1c 2.73V with the stock 2M2 B-C resistor. I tried 820k (1.5V) and 4M7 (4.2V) but 2M2 sounds better to me. Not a lot of change.
  • Q2c 0.8V - unaffected by the above resistors.
Very cool, almost unusable, too quiet. I'll see if I can rig up a turret board layout with an LPB-1 at the end, which will give me a nice trio of 2N5088s.

Here's a Germanium Fuzzrite I've had for weeks.

20221203_222325.jpg

Q1 is an ASY34S hFE 79 leakage 60, Q2 (greenie) is a TG5 1L hFE 39 leakage 27. I tried another low gain greenie in Q1 and it was thinner, brighter, a bit quieter. This combination is louder and fatter.

I tried C500k for Depth but the tones were all messed up so I went back to B500k.

Very different from the Silicon version. It's louder and with Depth halfway it doesn't get quieter, just fatter. Basically 3 tones: low gain and grainy, medium gain and fat, high gain and splatty aka the classic Fuzzrite tone. 10n from input to ground to kill the radio star and bacon sizzle but it's not as bad as its Silicon brother. The latter however cleans up better, almost like a Fuzz Face, this one gets quieter but still dirty instead.

Finished up these 2 designs in the past 2 days. Going to send them off to Tayda these will be my 2nd and 3rd designs. My first is still being made is more of a test to see how if i botched anything up :ROFLMAO: What do you guys think? Im particularly worried about the gradient on the p;anet im not sure how that will take....

I like your designs, especially the samurai one. Here’s how my vectorized gradient came out, just white and color, no gloss, I think they print just fine in my experience 33651144-4265-489D-A424-A1258425C032.jpeg

Ok cool! Im totally confident now! I have my first design in right now. It says its pending i dont like the design at all but i keep telling myself it was to test the waters haha So these 2 designs im considering my first!

EDIT: That came out great BTW! Is there a build report?

Thanks! This is one of my own designs I made to sell, so I didn't do a build report for it. I always feel weird showing things I build for profit because it feels almost like advertising. I hope to do more build reports in the future when I'm making things just for myself. I'm really itching for a chorus so maybe one of those is in my future if I can track down the chips after the holidays get done hitting me! Also, here is how the gradient looks in illustrator for reference.

Gotcha! It always looks kind of weird in Illustrator but looking at the final product it looks great! I might do another design before putting in the order!
