Was he playing the sunburst tele with the bender?
Yep, at least some of the time. This was right around when Untitled came out. One show was in Port Chester at the Capitol Theater, another was at a local high school one town over from where I went, which often booked a lot of really great acts back in those days, i.e. Cream, The Doors, Mahavishnu, and many others.

Did you say you were from Connecticut? There's a great Mountain bootleg of them playing at New Canaan high school a few months after playing Woodstock

Yep, Fairfield County at that time and this was Staples High School in Westport. Lots of other high schools around there had nice auditoriums and booked great music with very low ticket prices back then too. I'll have to see if I can track down that Mountain boot, saw them at Fillmore East on NYE 1970 and at least one or two other times as well.

what about a 12x2?

😎
Nah, I need that Back to the Future 1x6'. That'll move some air.

I always wondered what it would have been like to see cool bands play at a high school. I would love to have seen mountain too. There are a bunch of good "official" mountain bootlegs on Spotify

The concert roster for my university was absolutely insane back in the day. Miles Davis; Frank Zappa, ABB; King Crimson; Talking Heads; Jimi Hendrix & Soft Machine; Joni Mitchell; Funkadelic…
There’d be like 30 *big* name artists each year and a bunch of other cool shows in the gymnasium. Nowadays they’ll have a single second-rate act for the fall bash thing at the start of the semester, and then a comedy show every once in a while.

UConn still pulled some really big shows when I went there but mostly just for spring weekend. I can't remember exactly because I didn't pay attention to that stuff. I saw the roots play on campus when I was there, and Mastodon played in the basement of the dining hall of my dorm. And I saw 1000 bands only @benny_profane would know or care about, that my friends booked through the drug free student association
