Man that particular YouTuber is a colossal bellend.
Agreed! Great term, btw
The incendiary clickbait hot take outrage guy
I feel like those people want to attract a certain form of attention that is a little gross.
The problem with YouTube “reviews” is that if you see a professional looking review, there’s a big chance that it’s a payed review, or the channel will try to be as positive as possible because, if you’re part of an industry, you don’t want to piss off brands.

And the non professionally made ones are normally pretty poor.

At the end of the day, it’s the sponsors the ones who pay the bills for the youtubers, not the people viewing the video, so the platform is just one big promotional channel for brands.

And the rest of social media is no different. Everybody is trying to sell you something. And the platform is just profiling you to try to make that advertising more accurate.

People shouldn’t look to social media for advice, specially if they want to decide on a purchase. But I think nothing’s going to change. It is what it is.
Not everyone is trying to sell you something😉 but a metric butt load are.

I find the like, subscribe, bell icon bullshit and please check out my donations page a but whore ish.

Like you said though, the ones with pure intentions are usual a bit more diy but I heard that one of those channels in particular is run by a very kind person…..😜

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying there’s no good content on YT. There are a LOT of good channels, both professional and non professional. But the problem I see with the ones doing reviews is this:

If the person is good, it’ll attract viewers. As soon as it amasses a decent chunk of viewers (let’s say, more than a couple thousand views per video on a constant basis), the channel will start receiving sponsorship offers. And the moment this person accepts one of these offers… it’s over, it’s now in the game.

It’ll then snowball into buying better equipment, producing better quality videos, trying to make a living from YT, Patreon, etc…

And when the channel has established itself, it’ll need to keep things going. And to pay bills, more offers are accepted and, so on, and so on…

The ones not making it are the ones that don’t attract viewers, and that may be for multiple reasons, but in a lot of cases it may be because they’re not that good, or they lack something that attracts people, whatever that is.

Then, there are channels that are specifically there to sell you something (those put up by companies).

I like the ones that are there just to teach you something, irregardless of how many people may find that useful (may be something really niche, but the desire to share the knowledge is stronger). They’re hard to find, usually you get to them by doing specific searches, and the algorithm certainly ignore those channels, but to me those are the visual equivalent to forums.

If I ever put videos up on YT, I’ll try to aim for that: share the knowledge, irregardless of the people watching the videos. And fuck the algorithm. 😆

It sometimes feels a bit weird to me how people on this forum seem to hate... every music related youtuber? And most pedal builders.

Professional YouTube pedal demos are pure shit. Great player playing 30k worth of pro gear with all kinds of post processing and we all play it through smart phone speakers the size of my pinky fingernail. You are given a sales pitch that this is the best pedal ever, this is the missing piece of the puzzle for you. You buy it and then act surprised it doesn't sound like the fucking demo. I wanna here crappy playing on crappy gear. Besides, most youtube demo people seem like total creepy douches, like the guys who graduated from highschool and still hang around the parking lot trying to pick up freshmen girls.

Demos almost never sell me on anything. Demoers rarely if ever play in a style I'm interested in, which makes it hard for me to know if I like a pedal. I hear guitar tones I love in music I like all the time, but I believe there's usually more than one way to achieve a particular tone and I don't need to cop their exact rig to get there

Ya I agree. 99% of the time when I'm watching a demo I fast forward to the point where they turn the gain all the way up. ANNDD even then they never play in a style relevant to my interests. I like watching andertons for the dumbassery. Lee and Pete have some pretty funny dialogue sometimes. Thats about it. I am not there for gear buying advice or anything

This cannot be said enough! Post processing or processing of any kind, really isn’t an accurate representation of the gear.

If you factor in how you mic the amp and what you use to record and another endless amount of factors, gear demos can really only go so far.

We live in this weird world where people make demos to sound good while playing through iBuds or whatever and it ends up being so processed that everything sounds like everything else. But!!!! But if you accurately try to capture a loud amp with a single coil guitar and a fuzz, someone will bitch about 60 cycle hum.

Weird man, just weird.

This is such a wonderful point! I am editing a video where I go on a diy tone quest to nail the Warren Haynes sound using pedals because there is more ways to skin a cat than two, four thousand dollar amps
“chappers”= pompous ass. The dreadlocks he used to have were a dead give away.
I forgot about those fucking things, i have expected it to become sentient and crawl off his head.

I'll just take forum member demos. Plenty of PCBs have made their way into my cart on those.

I did buy my HOG2 based off a demo though. I think it was Nate Navarro. Based on that experience, not pulling those tones, I think I learned my lesson. But it may be more my ability or actual lack thereof to blame.

I used to quite like Rhett Schull but these days he talks like a bad TV journalist putting the emphasis on all the wrong syllables - Why do people change the way they talk when there's a camera nearby? Plus I think he's run out of things to say. Seems like a decent bloke though. The only ones I can bear to watch these days are in fact Andertons. I just have them on in the background while soldering. I thought the whole "exposé" thing was a little overly dramatic but he is correct - Lee should have disclosed his involvement with Victory. I don't mind him and Danish Pete but cannot bear that idiot Chapman. Pete does blather over the top of Lee a bit which can be annoying at times. But overall they're ok.

As far as Victory gear goes - I've played a few of their amps and pedals and they don't do it for me. But then I'm a hopeless amp snob because I build my own.
