Possible blown speaker...

Howdy,

Found a 1x12 cab on FB Marketplace and jumped on it bc it was really cheap. Guy had it listed in good condition, and the cab itself is. It has a G12K-100 in it (it's an old crate 1x12). I suspected it could happen, but I get it home and it def doesn't work (didn't have a way to test it conveniently). I found a replacement speaker (G12K-85), sounds great.

Now that I have the old speaker out, it *appears* to be in really great shape other than the dust cap being pushed in a bit. No tearing or anything around the cone, doesn't look nearly as bad as what I got in my old 1960A. However it BARELY outputs any sound. What it does output is only high end, almost sounds like it's coming from a little 1" speaker from a speak n' spell.

It's an 8 ohm speaker, but measures at 5.6.

Of course, I don't know anything about speakers- could it be that the innards are somehow fried or otherwise ruined? Is looking into fixing it even worth it? It's not like it's a vintage greenback or something.

I'm betting the speaker was facing upwards when something was dropped into the center. Probably effed up the coil. Does the speaker move in and out freely as you *gently* push it?

I had a JBL 12 inch that I had just sat down, when my cat spike took the opportunity to jump off the upper storage shelf into the middle of that speaker. Yup, that's all it took. Trashed the coil. It was part of a two way stereo speaker, not guitar.

It was a made in china JBL and never sounded very good, so it's a magnet now.

The sound your describing reminds me of when i had a couple oxfords where the magnet cracked. Can happen fairly easily apparently if the cabinet is dropped etc. around the back just for a crack around the magnet. My speakers were quiet and very thin

These were also 54 year old speakers so the crack may be larger.

As it turns out, this thing doesn't move when I press on the speaker cone. It must all be fused together in there.
Yup! It's toast. You can have it re-coned and it'll be good as new. Not exactly cheap tho, probably get a used working one for less...... Pretty sure Weber does re-cones.

Yeah, I think I'll just have it scrapped. There is a guy here in town I've had work on a couple speakers of mine, I may ask. I did look at reconing kits on parts Express and as you said... Might as well get a used or even new one.

I did just stumble into two NIB Madison Symphony 12 inch speakers, which are apparently a rebranded g12k-85. I put one in and really like how it sounds, and I got the two of them for 50 bucks.

I have a fender ps15b (these were made by gauss from like 72-74). 15” speaker in fenders “professional series” cabinets. Cost of recone…. 315$. Theres one on ebay right now 45 mins away from me for 299, but the frame is rougher than mine.
