What's your current headache?

Welcome to the only place on the internet with a civilized discussion related to politics. Hopefully I didn’t just jinx that.

I don’t want to entertain immigrating because it feels like such a cliche after an election. There are a ton of other reasons to be disillusioned with the American dream(s).

We are in a culture war. But that is all a distraction from the real problem. We should be in a class war against the affluent.

I have definitely been considering moving back to Europe, but not just because of the political environment in the US (Europe can be bad too, especially Italy right now), also to be close to family again now that the kids are growing up and don’t speak Italian…
My parents moved back to France when my sister and I moved out of the house. The political climate there isn't great either. I suppose there's my dad's home country of Iceland but boy is winter depressing.

I'm already struggling with it getting dark early. 🎶 When the sun hits your eye like it's 4:45, that's November! 🎶

My wife is an immigrant of 11 years and the majority of her family is elsewhere in the world, so we had been talking on and off for years about relocating, things like this just bring the topic back up.

Realistically we live in a solid blue state with one of the best local governments we've had in a while and I doubt our lives will change dramatically under any presidential administration, but not doing anything and saying it's going to be okay just doesn't feel like the right thing to do.

Canada is extremely likely to elect our own populist, conservative government at the next election. Justin Trudeau is extremely unpopular and there's a very active alt-right movement. If you were to flee the states on account of the political climate it wouldn't exactly be a lateral movement, but close. I can't really imagine living somewhere else but the next few years are probably going to be pretty depressing.

I do think we won’t actually end up moving. My wife and I talked about how we need to stick around to help fix things. I totally agree that we should fight the plutocracy instead of each other. I’m so tired of thinking about all this!

My wife and I decided we need to stop talking about it at home because we caught our seven year-old saying "I can't believe people voted for the bad person, he's just garbage."

"No talking politics at bedtime" was never something I anticipated saying to my kids.
My 7yo daughter is hilarious. When I told her the news yesterday morning she responded with "oh come on!" I'm raising a tiny female George Oscar Bluth. Same, girl. Same.

🤕🔨 I can't find an emoji for a nail, but you hit the nail on the head. >90% of us are closer to the poorhouse than the clubhouse. We've got more in common than we think and can do great things when we remember that. The loud buttcaps don't speak for us—we need to speak for ourselves. Be excellent to each other.

Bend over, relax and let it happen, cause it’s coming. I just hope he doesn’t really let all those asshats he’s surrounded himself with into his cabinet.
I hate to laugh, but I gotta. Nah dude. Those are the only people he's gonna let in.

Only those that have kissed the ring sufficiently. It's why he chose Vance as his VP: Vance may have initially been highly critical of Trump, but he also did a very, *very* public about face on the issue around the time of his Senate run and has essentially been a loyal sycophant ever since.

We're gonna have a government run by the likes of Kash Pastel.

Dude wrote a children's book about Trump called "The Plot Against the King".

We're so cooked.

When Trump got elected the first time, Germany had a whole campaign of "are you a scientist or engineer in a country with an anti-science leader? Come to Germany!" My wife said if they do it again I should start looking more seriously. We've also considered some of the Nordic countries, seems like they're generally doing alright.
No idea if Sushi box is your full time gig but do your sums specific to what you're doing. Our systems are so so different - I guess most of the UK and Europe tax rates would seem eye opening coming from America but also here if you're hurt and bleeding people come and fix you and there's no bill at the end...

Yes, but we're also in a season of unending growth and America being the only world super power milliterally and economically to one where it's not - with all the social and cultural changes that will entail.

Here's something related to the field I work in... the yellow has gone up a lot more in 2022 and 2023 .... source Screenshot 2024-11-08 at 01.19.10.png

Your post brought back a lot of memories about growing up with my parents. My father is from Iceland, and my mother is from France. They often criticized America right in front of me, as if it weren’t my home. Sure, Europe has some wonderful social safety nets, but my dad’s private practice wouldn’t have been nearly as financially successful there—it would have been taxed heavily, which I reminded him of every time he critiqued America.

Regarding Europe’s tax rates, they’re fantastic for things like eliminating medical bills, but they’re less beneficial in other areas and can create a certain cultural attitude. When I visited my cousins in Copenhagen during college, it was an eye-opening experience. I already knew that Europe’s left is far more liberal than America’s. I was anxious because it was just before the recession and I was worried about finding a stable career after graduation and grad school, one that would allow me to support myself. Meanwhile, my cousins and aunts, despite their graduate degrees, chose to be starving artists and openly mocked me calling the American dream BS. This is ironic because my European parents and many immigrants that come to the US very much value education and hard work. Maybe their comments would have held more weight if they hadn’t then asked me for money to buy groceries to treat me to smørrebrød (which, honestly, I found awful).

As for your post about automotive production numbers, I’m not sure it’s relevant to this discussion. Regarding China’s growth outpacing the rest of the world, it’s worth noting that their success is domestic, not global. China has developed extensive road infrastructure, and its population is buying Chinese-made cars en masse. This demand will eventually level off or decline. American cars may be parts bin to the max, but Chinese cars currently lack the quality to be road-legal here, let alone in Europe or Japan.

this isn't correct - china is exporting EV to Europe - the Biden stimulus packages was partly about bringing in tariffs on Chinese EV, the same is true with the tariffs the EU brought in.... https://www.usitc.gov/publications/332/executive_briefings/ebot_china_ev_exports.pdf
Both in the EU and US there's moves to try and protect their own industries against Chinese car imports - but this is a massive shift in how the world is balanced. This has knock on effects on a countries instustries, supply chains and economy and then politics.
