Danelectro Spring King Junior

Bahahahahaha I'm totally getting this.

I find the fundamental idea of "real spring reverb but on your board" very silly (not that I wouldn't rock a SurfyBear if my day job were surf, but it's not, so...) but this is the most practical version of that very silly idea.

Wait… they may just be regular chicken head knobs. I just realized that this isn’t a 1590B sized pedal— it’s more like an extra long 125B, in which case I’m almost certain it’s using an accutronics AMC 2bF tank (or maaaaybe a really small tray-less BMN-series pan

I’m betting it’s the former of the two, the blue-box.

I picked up an original Dano Spring King thing earlier this year. Now I need to compare…

the OG has a PT2399 in it for some reason that I'm not hearing in the Junior, anyone else?
I dunno, I'm a little suspicious of how long the decay is for such a small spring, so I think there might be some trickery going on - but it's well tuned to hide it for sure.

FWIW there is the https://scientificguitarist.wixsite.com/home/riptide-spring-reverb DIY project, but it's obviously much larger.

I can't find the Spring King Junior on sale so no idea what it costs, but the Spring King is quite cheap, so this might be a nice way to get a real spring reverb (although like I said, I suspect it also has a PT2399) on your board.

(FWIW I built the Disappearing Act from the same site and it was a very simple build, but you also need to lug a spring tank around so not a practical thing for gigging necessarily)

Yeah, I haven’t opened mine up yet, but there’s tons of info online so I knew about the PT2399. Just a cheap-and-cheerful purchase.

I “discovered” the Accutronics bluebox before I even knew how to solder, and was scheming and dreaming to turn it into a pedal.
Some time later, people who knew how to build pedals (such as Spaceman) were doing just that , housing the bluebox inside pedals.

I love both surf music and Danelectro, so I was smitten with the Spring King. It took me a decade or whatever to find one at all, and then find a deal…

Some info on the King:

Hopefully similar info on the Junior will be soon forthcoming.

@manfesto please change the thread title from “Danielectro” to “Danelectro” to help make it easier to find.

Need to see the 60 cycle hum review to see if it drips. But it sounds really good. Like every modern spring reverb, the decay is too long and the highs are too harsh.

What is it about vintage Gear and the prominent midrange and sweet, not harsh high end? I hear it in vintage guitars and pedals. Sadly only online.

Early recordings still sound sweet, not harsh, and so would not have component drift-over-time.
Is it in the mastering to vinyl, the lower fidelity of early analogue recording gear… what?
