Worst Cover Songs Of All Time

My entry is anything by Pomplamoose.
I hate everything about that band and its ecosystem of bands, musicians and Youtube channels.
The bands are definitely a weird manufactured product. I’ve been watching their dead wax channel where they do song analysis with a guest and really enjoying it though.

I just remembered that John Lennon did an album of covers in 1975 called Rock'n'Roll. I like it but especially like his version of Stand By Me. It's a great song which should only be covered by those who can do it justice and I think the Lennon version is very good.

I also love anything that The Cramps have covered. Their version of Love Me is good - not as good as the original by The Phantom but I saw them play it once and it was fun. Their versions of Charlie Feathers songs are great too.

That's the channel I meant. Love the guests and the insights, can't stand the two hosts :)

That’s how I feel about Rick Beato. I don’t like that guy, but sometimes he gets guests that I can’t resist watching.

This is the kind of crap I find infuriating and I don't even really like the original. What is the point of this? Selling cars or something?

I probably heard like half a dozen of these types of covers in whatever TV shows I was watching in the past year or so but I couldn't name you one. Entirely forgettable.

I do not hate the weezer cover album because I hate the style. I enjoy music pretty broadly, not just heady jazz. Weezer has sucked all the life out every one of those covers. They added nothing but a wash of blandness. Every single song sounds worse than the original. It barely sounds like Weezer. I truly felt embarrassment for them as I listened.

This is a subjective thread and that's fun. David King's drumming gives me goosebumps while I find Ozzy's voice unlistenable. I still think Weezer shred replacing Iommi shred is an atrocity. And to be extra clear, I don't hate Weezer. I have Pinkerton in my vinyl collection. Apologies if I yucked your yum but I stand by it 100%.
I totally get where you're coming from, like I said the Weezer cover was not very exciting so I'd chalk it under "bland", but not offensively so (to me). Actually similarly the Machine Gun Kelly cover would be fine if it was anyone else than MGK doing it, it's competently done IMO, and without his persona being tied to it I feel like it would be fine.

For me it's usually a case where too plastic/fake feeling production hurts my soul, like with that Don't Start Now cover or the Disturbed one. But for whatever reason the Weezer cover doesn't trigger that for me - I don't understand the reasons why, and to be honest it's not really that important to know either.

Today I learned that Weezer has an entire album of covers. I listened to the whole thing and it's tough to choose which was the most offensive. I mean, they did Stand By Me, Billie Jean and No Scrubs but I think folks around here would hate the Black Sabbath the most.
As someone who was super hyped for the Teal album, bought it day one, and made the terrible mistake of having it be the only album I downloaded for offline listening on a 6 hour flight I was taking day of release, the album is terrible, but the cover of No Scrubs is legitimately great imo

I hate everything about that band and its ecosystem of bands, musicians and Youtube channels. The name, the overexcited guy on the piano, the deadpan singer and her mugging for the camera and irritating hand movements, the white guy old school hipster DIY funk ethos.

They have a band called Scary Pockets that does funk covers. They're all great musicians but they exude that Berklee hipster chopster smarminess that turned me off Vulfpeck.
I hate that forced funkification of songs. Similar to how slowing down a song makes it meaningful.

They have a channel where they interview session players and go over their famous sessions. I just can't stand the fake overexcitement for the clicks. You thought Rick beato was fake, freaking Jack Conte has to be the least genuine music guy on Youtube. At least i hope he's playing it up and mugging for the camera. What if he's actually like that in person?! That's a scary thought.

I will post this cover because the bass player Nick Campbell is a beast but I stand by everything I said about the band.

This is bringing back terrible, terrible memories…

These two did a holiday commercial years ago that was so maddening I had to look them up in order to “know the devil’s name”.

I don’t know if it’s on the web anywhere, but it ticks every single box you mentioned. “Hey could ya please get outta my face” extreme close-up on the singer, and the dude could not have been more tickled by his own antics (and fun sweater, I’m sure).

Eew. Thanks for reminding me.

I generally don't like them, and especially jack, but I do enjoy their one Busted Kneecaps song–– reminds me of something 10cc would've done.

Also agreed about vulfpeck. Hate that stuff sooooo much. I had to listen to the same 6 vulf songs over and over every day when I worked at a music store bc the assistant manager was obsessed. If I had to choose between seeing Vulfpeck in concert and Jacob Collier in concert, I'd choose death. Which brings me to my next entry for this list:

Jesus christ... People always think I must love JC since I'm a theory nerd and into prog and xenharmonic systems and everything, but man... everything this dude does is the most overstimulating, tasteless, jumble of twee that has no sense of self awareness or capability to edit down. The whole toxic positivity he-bjork persona doesn't help either.

The dude always comes off as if he lives in his own world, a highly filtered music bubble of his own creation with carefully chosen but limited outside interaction. I kind of admire that to be honest, but I wouldn't want to hang out with him or go to one of his concerts.
Also, he-bjork is very fitting 😂

I may be alone here but I LOATHE SRV's cover of anything Hendrix. His covers just reek of self-indulgence and wankery. It's kind of like explaining a joke. He over-plays everything.
You're not alone... ;)

I've always found this an exceptionally awful example of lack of blue eyed soul:

I really want to like Mick Karn, but this ain't helping! :poop:

This sounds like Andy Samberg doing Jack Johnson on SNL.

“Vegan cookies!”

Jacob Collier always sounds like he just inhaled helium. He should do a vocaI album with J Mascis, who speaks like he's exhaling a spliff and sings like he's talking a rice dump.

I like Vulfpeck up to and incuding Back Pocket.
I also love early Björk. I didn't follow her when she started doing more experimental stuff but she's a unique talent who can sound like stepping on a cat sometimes. But some of her songs are amazing. So Broken always floors me.

Wow. SRV's Little Wing is my favorite guitar song of all time. It contains the best bend of all time, IMHO.
