Probably not an op Amp but a discrete transistor circuit that would run well off phantom power.

As for the transformer there's a whole range that could work depending on how much you want to spend.

Ah ok, there are a few OPA chips more than capable of driving a transformer, both the OP1611/2 or OP1691/2 would work well, I presume just a buffer and a zobel network into the transformer, especially if it has a fairly high impedance, like more than 600 essentially. Discrete would probably be more fun though.

I don't get the desire here though. Anyone can approximate a basic amplifier saturating a subpar transformer. But because that's been dressed as a product, NOW it's desired? It's a shitty active DI in a fancy package. You can drive a transformer with your mic pre and do the same thing, just at a slightly larger voltage.

I very much doubt the voltage is still 48v by the time it hits the OP-Amp, that's assuming the info about a burr brown op-amp is correct, I couldn't find mention of that, just a "Secret Analogue Circuit". I was just giving OP options if they wanted to replicate it. Could be done for not a lot of money if you just want to experiment.

I definitely think a certain amount of mysticism has arisen around transformers in recent years. Probably because they're becoming less and less common in audio gear
 
The demo sounds cool. I’ve got a vintage SM7 I like that needs a lot of gain. People often recommend a triton fethead or a cloudlifter to go with them (similar 48v +25db devices) but those are closer to $100 and marketed as transparent.

I wonder what’s going on in those and how hard they’d be to DIY.
 
Yeah the cloudlifter is easily to DIY

Initially I thought something like the INA163. But maybe a INA103. Would run happily at 48v. 50dB gain into a 2:1 stepdown. Or maybe it's just 1:1
 
Based on my limited knowledge of running things off phantom power, this is what I was thinking. It's too expensive for me to try without some assurance that it might work.
