Superfuzz-ish circuit?

Yeah, Superfuzz is one of my all time favorites (BYOC Leeds Fuzz was the 2nd thing I ever built), but the “octave” part of it is pretty subtle to my ears.

Foxx Tone is an equally excellent fuzz with a much more noticeable octave. You can also get some cool metallic (vaguely ring mod-ish) sounds if you turn the Fuzz (aka Sustain) knob almost all the way down with the octave on.

As always, the correct answer is: build one of each! ;)

One of my first builds was a Propolis (Bumble/Kay), and it’s a very fun SF-adjacent pedal. I added a Volume pot- “no controls!” is a fun gimmick I suppose, but… not for me!

PS- I used to use a Wattson Superfuzz “mega-scoop mode” on bass in a heavy psych trio, influenced by Hugh Hopper of Soft Machine who used the Shaftsbury version. Highly recommended!

When I got back into the scene a few years ago I got obsessed with the Super-Fuzz. Made my own modded board. Took a few mods from here and there, and added in a switchable octave/tune thing so you could have a fairly normal sounding fuzz and then a super accentuated octave sound

What kind of tone are you seeking? Gated? Lots of sustain? Wall of noise?

Have you tried a Fuzz Factory? It can make some pretty nasty fuzz tones if you have the patience to explore the combinations. The Buzzaround and it's variations are popular fuzz pedals. The Sola Sound Hybrid Tone Bender is also worth a try.

Personal favorites:
FZ-1
Screw Driver
Arctic White Fuzz
Karma Suture
Pink Purple Fuzz
Buzzaround

The FZ-1, Karma Suture, Buzzaround & Hybrid Tone Bender contain Germanium and require some selection / tweaking to get them running right.

The Screw Drive & Pink Purple also contain Germanium, but those circuits are much more forgiving. I discuss all of these circuits in The Boneyard.

The (best, imo) variation
I'm also a devotee of the Hyper Fuzz - I built the Aion Hypercube as my first build not from a complete kit and it worked (somewhat amazingly as it's a complex build). Now I'm a little curious if this one is any different / if there is any use having both other than just the sheer joy of such a monstrous fuzz, etc.

The clean boost on this one is kind of a secret weapon.

I've really been enjoying the Scarab Deluxe/Dung Beetle lately. I don't use fuzz very much but that one is fun.

The only thing which puts me off building the Hyped Fuzz is the sheer number of components. For a fuzz! That's why I like the Fat Fuzz Factory. I don't use it much but it's a lot of fun when I do, and it has a fraction of the number of parts. It's kind of a gold standard in fuzz I think.
