I feel that, I love smallbear and i have sympathy for the sourcing problem that we all find ourselves in, but they have less and less of the specialty stuff id like to order from them and have had to turn to other sources i dont like, even like... Amazon... blegh
I’ve decided to turn to smd and adapter boards. Might ruin a few in the beginning getting the technique down, but I think it will pay off in the long run.

In theory it’s very simple, but...
The hard part is soldering the transistor to the adapter, but with the right tip and some practise it can’t be all that hard. Then you put some legs on the adapter and use it as a normal tranny.
SBP has 2N5089s for $0.35 a piece (minimum order of 10, but I mean you can never have too many 2N5089s), which is cheaper than Mouser until you're buying them by the hundreds:
Top Quality Parts for Guitar Effects Pedals and DIY Music Devices. Knobs, Pots, Switches, Kits, LEDs, Enclosures, Jacks, Wire, Resistors, Capacitors, Semiconductors
As far as 2N5457s, you really are best off buying MMBF5457s (Mouser, Tayda, wherever has them cheapest) and SMD adapter boards. Works out to well under a buck a piece.
