One of the things I particularly like about this place is that there are no flashing lights, pop-up ads, movies appearing in the corner of the screen etc. I hate that stuff. I was just on the recently revamped BBC website and it is becoming hard to stomach because of the screen being taken up by ads. I haven't visited TGP in years but when directed there by a link recently was horrified at all of the advertising crap everywhere on top of all the stupidity on show in the comments. Why on earth would a sane person subject themselves to all of that?
I'm not sure if those of you in the US appreciate what the rest of the world is like regarding advertising. In Europe TV has ads but they are generally way more low key and less intrusive than in the US, are limited in duration compared to the US (IE don't take up half the air-time) and are in designated, predictable time slots. Here in Australia we have fewer ads per hour than the US but they are possibly a bit more like ads in the US. In fact some actually are ads which were made in the US. And we still have some decent government run stations which have fewer ads, and the ABC has no ads at all other than station promos. There are no ads during a program at all on the ABC. So as long as you like UK sitcoms and series you can happily watch with no ads.
But a huge problem for me is websites with ads popping up all over the screen. It drives me crazy - I am one of those people who notices everything (if a boom mic comes into shot in a movie I will see it. Same for reflections of cameras in windows), so I find it incredibly distracting. So more often than not I just give up and close the page.
So Pedal PCB is a happy place. NO ADs. May it be like this for ever!
