Ads EVERYWHERE!! Except here - yay!!

One of the things I particularly like about this place is that there are no flashing lights, pop-up ads, movies appearing in the corner of the screen etc. I hate that stuff. I was just on the recently revamped BBC website and it is becoming hard to stomach because of the screen being taken up by ads. I haven't visited TGP in years but when directed there by a link recently was horrified at all of the advertising crap everywhere on top of all the stupidity on show in the comments. Why on earth would a sane person subject themselves to all of that?

I'm not sure if those of you in the US appreciate what the rest of the world is like regarding advertising. In Europe TV has ads but they are generally way more low key and less intrusive than in the US, are limited in duration compared to the US (IE don't take up half the air-time) and are in designated, predictable time slots. Here in Australia we have fewer ads per hour than the US but they are possibly a bit more like ads in the US. In fact some actually are ads which were made in the US. And we still have some decent government run stations which have fewer ads, and the ABC has no ads at all other than station promos. There are no ads during a program at all on the ABC. So as long as you like UK sitcoms and series you can happily watch with no ads.

But a huge problem for me is websites with ads popping up all over the screen. It drives me crazy - I am one of those people who notices everything (if a boom mic comes into shot in a movie I will see it. Same for reflections of cameras in windows), so I find it incredibly distracting. So more often than not I just give up and close the page.

So Pedal PCB is a happy place. NO ADs. May it be like this for ever!

I did get a laugh out of the spam post in General that was something like "Nice gay in your area <link>".

I also second uBlock Origin, you can even get it on some phone browsers, at least on Android.

But the PPCB website and forum in general is just like a fresh breath of air, nobody is trying to sell stuff to me by force.

No one needs to sell you anything here… but hang out long enough and your PPCB wishlist will soon be as long as your queue of boards and parts you already have ready to build lol

If you really want to get into ad-blocking, then you can run PiHole for your network, but that's a bit of work.
The PiHole is 100% worth it, I don't even recognize the Internet when I use it outside my house, it always takes me a minute to remember how much it sucks with ads, like using a computer from 1998 with IE, 100 virus toolbars, and the weatherbug. Browser extensions are nice but the PiHole kills them on every device.

Anyone here should be able to figure it out, and production and inventory on raspis is up enough where they are affordable again.

It's the "uBlock Origin" extension for Firefox browser. It blocks ads for you :)

That's what I've been using. Doesn't bog the cr@p out of your browser like some do.

On TV lately they've been saturating the commercials with not very intelligent but well endowed young women shouting:
MY MAN'S BEEN USING BLUE CHEWS, NO ONE HAS TO KNOW!

The only "ads" you'd ever see here would be relevant and non-spammy... no random paid promotion garbage.

I could see a small banner or header advertising a significant sale with one of the parts vendors or something like that, more of a heads up than a push to sell you something you don't need.

I'm not even particularly fond of the "email newsletter" trend. If you want to look at PCBs you'll come look at PCBs, no need to interrupt your morning routine with a daily sales pitch.

You gotta be careful with those Viagra alternatives... these nearly put me in the emergency room.
