No wonder they did a recent cash-grab to expand their user-base — Canva's business model is subscription-based.

According to Affinity's announcement, there are no plans to change how Affinity is sold. Yeah, maybe no current plans at Affinity to go subscriptshitshun, but I bet Canva'ss has already unofficially "got milk?" plans to bilk.
 
If the subscription model is $5 a month, sure, but otherwise, I sure hope they don’t. But wouldn’t be surprised if they do after a year or so. It’s the best value design suite out there and they know it.
 
I was just coming here to post this. This is very disappointing... 😞

If I have to pay a recurring fee I might as well just be using Adobe. I hate that because I really like the Affinity interface and workflow better but it's lacking in a few areas that might not be so easy to ignore if I'm paying monthly.

That's what they always say... We really should have seen it coming, Serif already sold out once in the 90s.

Yep. It was inevitable. There is nothing good that is free these days. If it's good and it's free -- it's too good to be true, and it will only last until they reach critical mass and have enough people hooked to start charging for it.
 
Just from my email (and I assume others?)

#1 is the issue, I believe. I have to have some faith that writing that "perpetual licenses will always be offered" has to mean something—but they could follow the model of CaptureOne (a photo editing software) and offer a perpetual license that doesn't allow for upgrades beyond the version you buy, or a subscription plan that keeps you up to date.

I agree with Robert that there are things that Affinity Design does really well (better than Illustrator), but I also used Illustrator since 88 came out, and just don't have to think about what I need to do to get what I want from it... I keep thinking I will devote the time to learn Design well enough to get me there, but also laugh at myself when I think that.

I bought the suite last week cause I can't justify Adobe pricing these days. My new laptop can't run my CS5.5 I bought 13 years ago. Something about it being 32 bits.

Affinity seemed like a good deal after trying out the apps for a few days and I want to avoid subscriptions as much as possible.

Everything just has to get worse all the time, huh?
 
I don't fault them for wanting the payout of being bought. Some people can retire now after some hard work, and now the customer base is going to get squeezed for more returns!
