I always read that the 5089s were higher gain than 5088. Are these interchangeable in this circuit or is there a reason for the 5088s?

Planning on building one of the versions in the schematic. Anything else to be done for extra mojo?

Not sure what the spec sheets say but my 89s have an Hfe about 100 higher than my 88s. Some muff variants use 89s so you should be good to go

They are interchangeable in the BMP and you won't hear a difference.

Gotcha. Is there any reason I need to use 4 of the same transistors or can I mix and match?

As long as they're all NPNs and you have the pins in the right spot it shouldn't really matter too much. Try out what you have and see how it sounds.

Yeah, feel free to mix 'em up. The BMP is not very sensitive to transistor parameters.
