SOLVED Blue Breaker no sound

Hey guys,

New here, first pedal build and trouble shoot. I am building a blue breaker and by pass works great but when I switch it on i get no output. i made an audio sniffer and i get sound into pin 3 (and none oft he other pins) of the tl072 but no sound coming out. i swapped op amps that i had extra and all 3 same issue. Im unsure about how the ic actually work would the next step be to check negative voltage on pin 2 and or make sure there is good continuity to pcb ground on pin 4? any help would be appreciated. looking forward to being part of the community!

I would start off by cleaning the back side of your board, check for shorts, also you should insulate the back side of the tone pot, if it touches any part of the solder points your going to cause a short.

I would also highly recommend cleaning up your foot switch having wire exposed like that may cause a short when cramming into your enclosure.

What do the connections to the jacks look like?

Do you get sound off of pin 1 of the ic?
Also what are your voltages from the ic?
I can reference one of mine to compare

This will help you troubleshoot on your own while others chime in

Maybe a silly question: but are you connecting guitar cable and amp cable in correct jacks. The fact that off makes sound leads me to believe you’ve cables swapped.

Thanks!

the cleaner helped make it look way better! Still having the issue though

Yeah are cables hooked as in attached pic. I ask this because I did this yesterday on a pedal circuit outside the enclosure.
Maybe it’s unrelated to your issue. But just thought to share my experience.

All your component values and orientation look good Kyle

You do have a few suspect solder joints

Your TL072 pin voltages should be power to pin 8, ground to 4 and all other input and output pins around half power 4.5v ish (VREF or voltage reference / op amp bias voltage)

Check pin voltages then all the VREF points you can see labelled on the schematic which should all be around 4.5v ish coming from your voltage divider the junction of R11 And 12

If you don't get expected voltages trace it back from that point to hopefully find your problem

You can use this systematic approach or just reflow any dodgy looking solder joints ( but where's the fun in that?) those that look dull, grey, crumbly or ball like, make sure you get a good connection between component leg /pin and solder pad

Just hold your iron on the joint for around 4 seconds until you see a nice solder pool

The link from @BuddytheReow shows how yer solder joints should look

Hopefully you're not using the dreaded (to me anyway) lead free solder, set your iron temp to around 370°C

Dumb question - you do have the IC in when you're testing - right? its not there in the pic
edit: not there in the last pic but is in the first. so probably a non issue

Im using solder with lead in it. I just checked some voltages (had to take a min to understand what i should and shouldnt have) I found i dont have +9v at pin 8 so I am looking into that currently

I will retouch the solder joints as well definitly trying to work systematicallly cause it will only help me understand more

very thankful for the input

edit no positive voltage on d5 either side but led is working retouchin d5 joints now

touched up the joints. still no voltage at d5 but i have 9v in and 7ish at the led

not sure what youre asking but the wires are all routed as the schematic says
