EHX Frequency Analyzer

Q: Are we not men?
A: We are effects pedal fanatics!

Anyway, the Frequency Analyzer is a really unique vintage ring mod which was favored by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, and I’ve got an uncontrollable urge to build one.

Take a listen for yourself if you fancy (couldn’t find demo that shows off much of what the pedal can do, so here’s a concert that features it a good amount):

Anyway, I suggest you use your freedom of choice by voting for this down below!

Where were you able to find 8038s?
I honestly don't remember. Probably one of the eastern European surplus vendors I used to buy from, or maybe Jameco. Though, I did try one from a cheap function generator I picked up from Amazon, and that seemed to at least be a close approximation of the real deal, and worked fine in this particular circuit

I have some that will be available when the PCB is complete.
I'm curious how you'll be handling the 15v power requirement? I know MadBean advises against using an additional chargepump, but I've yet to have any issues with mine (LT1054 for the +/-15v, and an off board Max1044 to get 18v from my 9v power supply)

The Freekout is 125b with a single board. There's really not a lot of parts to it, so wouldn't see a reason for that or a larger enclosure. This isn't Dead End FX 🤣
For some reason I was thinking the freekout was 1590BB. Looked at the schematic again and, yeah 125B makes way more sense lol

I assume a 18v into a regulator and then an inverter is steadier but this is from the LT1054 datasheet and assuming typical diode drops is pretty dang close to ±15v when running off 9v,

Devo always did put on a good show, all those quirky-jerky antics ... 😺

Whenever somebody says these types of devices aren't musical, I think back to seeing Wayne Krantz live (sadly, not with an effects-loving bass player), so here (with an effects-loving bass player), I give you yet more musical ring-modulation...

Yeah, I've posted that clip before and this won't be the last time.

I saw them on their last tour, and they still got it. Devo's one of my favorite bands. They were basically the whole reason I paid to go to Punk Rock Bowling 🤣.
Sadly, Mark didn't bust out the Frequency Telenyzer

Which show were you at? I was at the Pier 17 show on Mark’s birthday.
I was at the Vegas show / Punk Rock Bowling September 2021.

Speaking of festivals, for my stepdaughters 16th, we took her and her friends to the Vans Warped tour like 4 years ago. Was pretty meh, until I heard the opening riff of Girl U Want. So, my wife and I make our way to the stage, and it's this Two-piece called Fantastic Plastics. They have a very definite Devo and B-52s influence in their original works. They were fun live, and awesome people to chat up afterward.
