Facemelter diode question

These are to protect mosfets from static discharge. I believe it’s a vulnerability unique to mosfets, in terms of common pedal components. At least that’s the main place I see these, besides charge pumps. It’s used on the zvex SHO (PPCB crackle booster) and amz mosfet booster.

Can't seem to discern if they're acting as clamping rectifiers or as clipping elements. Doubtful they are buffering anything. Other xxxx Melter circuits use red LEDs or one red LED and one 9.1V Zener.
