CONTEST Fig's Happy Hot Holiday

CONTEST
I brought myself to listen to this cringefest and it's taking everything I have not to delete it. I sing like an amputee; can't hold a note, can't carry a tune.
You mean you weren't singing like that on purpose? 🙀
Not spoofing C&W, like Ween? 🤠

I bet you could hold a note, this notes for you:

Serious headbanging at the end of that vid.

If you MTB'd, you could carry a Tune. Well, I guess you don't have to bike to carry it...

Seriously fun, though, and funny. Don't ever stop building pedals nor stop doing demo songs like the FILT one here,
or this other crappy demo...:poop:

FWIW I've got the same one. Well the name is different, but they're clearly just a white-label product that is rebranded all around.

I used to use a damp sponge, but I had the first tip of my iron corrode until it was actually hollow and in practice just ruined. I've switched to a brass sponge - again I think it's better to use a brass sponge with non-leaded solder. Or alternatively I think you should use distillated water with a normal sponge, and ain't nobody got time for that.
Personally, I use straight tap water on disposable sponges. I go thru sponges a lot faster than I do tips. I avoid corrosion/oxidation when using a water-wet sponge by keeping my tips tinned at all times. Whenever I wipe the tip on the sponge, I re-wet the tip with some fresh flux and a touch of solder. It's just habit now.

Each of us will find our own way in the art & science of soldering.

I think I might spring for this https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/kester-solder/24-9574-7618/3660017 (tried looking at what would be the closest to the leaded one linked earlier in the thread). I think it's pretty much the same except obviously no lead, and thus a lot higher melting point (~45 degrees celsius higher). It's expensive, but should serve me for a long time. Some tip activator too at the same time. Any suggestions for flux? I don't think I need more flux for soldering itself necessarily, but more for desoldering.

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to be available on Digi-key (plus I already put in an order on Sunday because I had to leave for a work trip).

I ended up getting this https://www.digikey.com/en/products...gTCBcDa5gbABgLQDEAyBlAjAZgKzIAqRyAcgCIgC6AvkA instead of the other tip activator, hopefully it's not complete shit. Helps drive the total cost down since I didn't realize it's all pre-tax and the solder I got is expensive as hell as a result, but hopefully it should handle all my pedal build needs for the foreseeable future.

Edit: It was in Kentucky today and they're estimating it gets here tomorrow. Going to have to really haul ass at this rate. About 4500 miles for you yanks, something around 50 hours or so if I calculated right.

Although as a funny coincidence, it's about the same distance as from Bangkok where Tayda ships from and I think something like 38 hours was the best DHL has done, so definitely doable.

That tip tinner looks just fine. That'll really help keep your tip "wet". (that what she said) sorry

All winning entries...thanks for all the feedback! From upside-down welding to solder art...medical to medieval, from the imaginative to harsh reality. From Garth to....well you get the idea.

As many have pointed out, the iron is but one component of many it takes to make a successful bond. While this station has a few advantages over a standard iron, it will only solder as good as you.

Like most things go...experience / confidence are crucial to consistency. I've seen huge improvements in soldering over the last year in the Build Reports, and I believe a good bit of that can be attributed to encouraging and challenging one another. Well done, keep it flowing!(y)

The Pace ADS200 station goes to @giovanni 🎉🥳 (y)

Congratulations! I hope this aides in the reduction of airborne articles, reduces stress, or at least fills in a blank spot on your bench.

Thank you all for playing along. Stay tuned!

Now, go build something! (y)

OMG thank you so much!!! I cannot believe it! I was just looking at my old crappy soldering station the other day and thought that I really needed to get a new one... well this is a great Xmas gift! And it comes at the most unlucky time for me (I got covid and threw my back in the same week). You spoil us @fig!
