Fuzz Heaven....

Hey all,

Just a quick 'looksee' at what's been goings on round these parts....
Absolutely unbelievable!.... I will say that after extensive testing I really like the BC108A's that I found for the Si version ... (Hfe ~150).
I have been playing quite a while (38 years) and I have never heard the like of these things...
Can we just have a group 'round of applause' for PedalPCB!!!!.
The NKT is just 'next level'..... Im speechless and now well aware why the bloody things cost so much!...
I love you all!... haha.

Did you use genuine NKT275's? Fantastic looking builds!

Hey fella, thanks, I think they came out looking pretty good for me!... Im really happy with them both!. No one has asked me if that is Bob Lazars drawing of the UFO he worked on though?... and that Im a little annoyed about!... :0
And yea, I truly paid through the nose for them but they are real, and came from a company here in the UK that some friends recommended to me (and actually knew the owner, which was was handy!) and are Q1 has Hfe : 65 , and Q2 has Hfe of 121.
But to be honest, Im glad I did go all in, it sounds fantastic and at least I now know what all the fuss/fuzz is about!. :)

Wasn't these guys was it? Dang that's a lot of cash for a transistor

Very nice. So when you say next level for the NKT275, what do you mean exactly? Can you go completely clean (and I mean surf guitar clean) with the Fuzz knob maxed out?
I double checked to see if you socketed them :)

Yup. I couldn't resist doing it 'properly' to find out what all the fuss was about.. TBH I'm impressed!. So worth it to me I guess!.

Hold on..... Im gonna try!!!!!!.....

So, I just tried to get it 'Dick Dale' clean.... and yup, just had the headphones on playing along with Misirlou and its pretty damn close!... Doesn't get entirely 'clean'. It still has the 'woody' tones and subtle sparkle that you know is coming from the pedal... but I really like that!.
To me its like playing a SS amp and then an old tube amp (unsurprisingly). The response feels completely different
Sorry for all the descriptive word salads... I will try to do a demo of both 'head to head'
With regards the "next level' comment. It just seems more 'complex' and harmonically 'rich' and just more authentic to my ears... But I may be just listening to the invoice that came with the transistors!. lol

I truly love the BC108A's as well but that's for the kinda Dave Gilmour thing.

Haha thanks... and yup I socketed them!... lol.
I am paying attn. I promise!...

Isn't it fantastic when you build something which sounds so good to you? Just one suggestion - I'd recommend finding some way of making the transistors secure in those sockets. The weight of the Ge transistors in particular may cause them to either fall out or become loose enough to cause issues down the line.

I just removed the socket from a pedal I built recently to see if it got rid of a crackling sound I was experiencing. My pedal board is small and placed right in front of my amp, so vibration from the speaker was (I suspect) rattling the transistor in the socket. I soldered the AC127 I was using directly to the board and the crackling disappeared. I mainly used the socket to audition various transistors, so I'm happy to solder this one in.

Love the artwork!

Yes indeed!... I truly love doing this and hope to continue for years to come, and absolutely, the fact that I have 'made' it (thanks to PPCB! and you guys!) def. makes the pedal experience much better imho. And, thanks so much for the info!.... I had heard that some folks put a little solder on one of the sockets to secure them in place. Is this sensible?... or is just removing the sockets when you know you are happy the best thing to do in your experience?. The sockets seems a really nice fit so Im hoping they will be OK for a while but I can def. see that removing the sockets is the best long term solution.

On another note, can somebody please tell me how to award 'medals' to folks who are helpful (and many kind souls have been on here!) as I see some folks have been kind enough to award them to me but I can't seem to figure out how to do it???? haha...
Im not dumb I promise, but I will freely admit I have much to learn!. ;)

Thanks so much again for the kind words and advice... I do listen, and appreciate the information received greatly.

I would use hot glue because it's easy to remove and it doesn't heat up the transistors. These transistors in particular are extremely valuable, I would be very careful with them. Also I would keep the pedal in a gilded safe, personally guarded by Analog Mike himself, and never take it to a gig ever. Only Jimi himself, ascended from the bottom of the sea, would be allowed to experience it :)

How about some sound samples?

As you wish.... ;)

The best I could 'knock up' quickly.... Theres a few gaff's, I was heavily medicated and the dog ate my homework so go easy!. The pedal is 'flat out' for all the guitar parts. Im only using my VOL knob to change the sounds... Its pretty wild!.... and I like it a lot but Im still getting used to it.
Hope it duth not offend anyones ears or sensibilities. Haha.

ps. I probably should say Done on my Strat. Verse 1&2 were position 4 (neck&middle). When it goes mental (mid 8 to the end) I switch to neck only PU. Fender custom shop 69 Neck (5.8k), and (Custom) RWRP Fender custom shop 69 middle (5.8k).
Boss Katana 100 MkII cleanish setting (driven Fender Deluxe) > Logic>iMovie>Youtube>your earholes.

I ask for a demo and this guy plays the hell out of Sleep Walk, complete with pickup resistance.
Glad these transistors went to someone who can play. Thank you!
