EG has 1/2" LDRs on sale. Problem is, if you wanna build a 'vibe or compressor, where you you find LEDs big enough? 
I've thought about building a pedal where one or more of the controls is an LDR mounted on the front panel looking out. As you cast shadow on the box, the tone changes. Kind of like an optical Theremin.
