From memory it's not a full-on and compressed as a regular Big Muff. It does the "vowel-sound" thing well and is less in-your-face than a lot of fuzzes out there. While it's not really an overdrive it's a pretty usable dirt pedal. I really must find the one I built - this is making me want to play it again!
Well I found it! What a cool pedal this is - it's possibly the most vocal-sounding Muff I've built. It can get plenty gainy but it's not instantly doomy. It seems to do that Gilmour thing better than any of the Cornish clones I've built!
I might build another one with top-mounted jacks now.
This is all great info. I’m not sure what the “Midas Touch mod” does but this is what the website says about it:
“Amber Overdrive with Midas Touch mod brings more harmonic definition and carefully added silky presence to this highly sought after distorted tone bordering on fuzz. It is like the circuit got a new heart of gold and the golden tone got even more golden! Like you found another vintage fuzz or overdrive that was even better piece of the puzzle and sums up even more satisfying harmonic content! Amber Overdrive with Midas Touch mod has the fat and saturated but cutting liquid lead tone you’ve always dreamed off!”
which isn’t super helpful for designing a PCB lol.
Their site also states that it is the same as the Golden Cello but without the built in reverb. They say it’s suppose to simulate a cranked 100w Marshall. I think it’s interesting that it is Big Muff based, since I have never associated a Big Muff with a cranked Marshall tone
I built the layout version on effectslayouts.blogspot.com, and the catch is going to be getting the pair of matched 2N3819s. I could be wrong, but I think they’re out of production.
