Muffler Noise Gate Pop When Over Threshold

Would anyone have a reason why there would be an audible pop of the the beginning of the notes when it hits the threshold on the Muffler Noise Gate? I'm using a bass guitar if that makes a difference.

Maybe here's another way to question this - is there a way to "soften" the cut? There's definitely a sweet spot, but it would be nice if there was a way to lengthen that sweet spot.
