A couple months ago someone made an offhand comment that I make tube bass preamp pedals, not onboard preamps. This was intended as a clarification, not a dare, but naturally I set about building a Space Heater preamp into a J-bass. And I finished it last night.
It's a Squier P-bass body with a Fender J-bass neck, Hipshot hardware, Nordstrand pickup, and LaBella "Watermelon Delite" strings, and the preamp is powered by a 9.6V NiMH battery pack, which should last it about 8 hours on a charge. The intention was for it to be a glorified wall ornament made from scraps I had laying around, but it actually turned out to be a pretty cool instrument that's comfortable to play and sounds great. I have some ideas for improvements on a v2 design, but those will be quite a ways out.
