Packaging, Does it Matter?

Does anyone care about packaging? I've been working on a project that's been growing, and I'm to the point where I have to work on the packaging. I've found myself in a cyclical debate on if it matters... I've seen pedals that arrive in pouches, wrapped in crinkly paper, boxes in boxes in boxes... Is this even a consideration? Does anyone care? I've also learned to listen to others because what I like apparently isn't the same as the masses... so here I am... Thoughts?

It's certainly a consideration- unboxing / first impressions are a big deal for the individual product as well as your brand.
I'd aim at rewarding the customer for choosing your product without forcing them spend too much on excess garbage along with it.

My personal opinions:
+1 pouches don't add value
brown box > white box

For what it's worth, I've been told by a store that sells some of my Bazz Fuss builds not to bother with boxes, as it's just clutter and the customers don't care. I did the baggy thing for a while too, but probably won't bother to get more when I run out. I usually try to provide an instruction sheet though, but I don't build for other folks super often

@p_wats that totally makes sense in that situation if it's a one-off build on display in a store- no need to put it back in a box.
However, if I ordered one of your pedals to be shipped to me or otherwise pass through other hands, I'd expect a box and a badass sticker.

*I'm especially keen on a box sealed with a sticker over where the little flap opens.

Interesting! No stickers on my end, but I do ship in boxes. That said, I don't do much aside from the odd commission, so no one has had high packaging expectations so far.

I could see taking it a bit further if I ever ramped up though

I agree. I’m not a collector, so I appreciate just getting the pedal lol.

brown box > white box

100000%. White boxes somehow feel ten times cheaper

Packaging is imo important but unless you’re shipping a ton it just comes down to thoughtful product selection - the cost of more custom stuff at small numbers is astronomical and is an easy way for customers to think they’ve overpaid for something.

I like printing instructions on card stock or similarly kind of nice / interesting paper but I also have tons on hand for non pedal building stuff.

Where’s a good source for the brown boxes? I’ve just been getting white ones from StompBox Parts.

I think I just got the ones I use off amazon. I do know that I had to go up an inch to 6x4x3 to get them in brown so they need a little more bubble wrap for a 125b

hahaha ya I save the tayda bubble bags and a few of the pedal size ones for shipping purposes. I still have way too many of them hahaha.
It worked out great last year with the Tayda’s pink bubble wrap because it supports breast cancer research. Same this year minus the Tayda pink stuff, I didn’t have any orders with them so far for this project.

For one-offs or small batches, no it doesn't matter but I do believe that packaging is an important part of branding if you're trying to be a full on pedal company. Don't have to go as hard as like Chase Bliss or OBNE but something more than just bubble wrap and shipping boxes. I screen print my own boxes and drawstring bags but I understand that not everyone has that as an easy option.
