"Pedal-building as a social experiment?".

You ever notice how solder fumes and shared PCB layouts make for surprisingly good conversation starters? Anyone else find that their passion for tweaking circuits leads to unexpected connections with folks who’ve got just the right kind of spare time?

Don't you first have to first invite people in your home to get to such conversations, meaning you already have these social contacts to begin with?

I am probably reading this wrong... So, please give an example of how these things came to be?

I met @Gordo in person because he ordered a board from me and I saw that he lived 10 minutes from my day job so I offered to deliver the board in person. I met @jhaneyzz the exact same way since he lived like a block away from Gordo.

I met @Ginsly in person because I inherited a bunch of components I didn't need and needed an easy way to get rid of them, now I get to bother him on the regular.

When I go to places like NAMM or Wood Wire Volts I obviously spend time talking to musicians, but the people I spend the most time talking to are fellow builders, because we have more in common. Guitar and bass are cool, but they're really just an excuse to get into pedals.

I can't stand any of you schmucks electronically! What makes you think I want to see your face?

Sorry, a bunch of Don Rickles clips in my instagram this morning, y'know.

Ret hot tips!
Moist Sponges!
Pads fluxed!
Solder sucked!
Robert wasn’t ashamed when he looked into my eyes while holding his solder sucker. Flux had burned with the excess heat my soldering station was set. I was nervous and my tip was dripping hot Kester lead free solder. Robert smiled at me and asked if he could offer some help. I felt the vibrations of the transformer insulations on my old Weller and said yes.

This all started on PedalPCB forum couple months ago. Robert started to PM me after I made a build report about TB MK I. First the messages he sent were about different fuzzes, but after a while they started to get more intimate. He crossed the line asking if I liked PAF sound and had ever consired being lead free. I really hadn’t, but on my response I gave he the truth about it by stating I was bit curious of it. But I didn’t get respond to my message and our conversations went to pause. I felt awful and feared if I had hurt Roberts feelings with too bold answer about my willingness on trying new things. But then the tide turned and my doorbell rang. It was Robert. As a joke I had asked him once if he could guide and superwise me building this special YATS circuit with submarine parts. Then against all odds he appeared into my front porch wearing his special soldering gloves. He assured those gloves were latex free and squirrels were not harrassed in manufacturing process. Gloves were beautiful and shined under 2000K fluorecent light. I wanted to touch the gloves and uncaringly asked if he had spare gloves to share, but Robert looked right through me doing absently-minded mumbling anf asking a question about if I had ever floored. I didn’t have time to respong ot say anything back when he quickly continued whispering ”I’m gonna make sure it’s RoHS this time”.

You got me drooling below.

You also left me hanging, with there being no pay-off.

I went to see his band! Super tight, and quite fun! Not just every group covers Wheatus.

It was cool to see Sushi HQ, and I was at least able to offer some screen printing pointers. That automatic wire stripper/finger remover is intimidating.

He has helped me with some things in the last couple years that have made a huge difference. That's also true of non-locals @jwin615, @Stickman393, @PedalBuilder, @jessenator and @leadfoot to name just a few (there are certainly more). I try to send transistor labels/shirts/Ween swag etc. Oh and I can't forget the always delightful Switchmaster, @Feral Feline. I almost ran into fellow local @drgonzo1969 when he had an extra Baron Samedi board, but I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

Hmm maybe I should start a "Chi Folks, Get In Here" thread and try to see what other local weirdos might wanna get a drink or a bite if we can get our shit together.

Failing that, the one PPCB Zoom hang I attended a while back was a good time... If I knew about any of that stuff I'd put one together. Do you need a paid account to start/host a meeting..? Notta clue. I can probably blackmail @Robert into attending - I'm friends with Mr. Body and he has an incriminating microfiche of R drinking Bud Light Lime with The Octaking. 🛥️

Yeah I figure one of these days I'll run into @drgonzo1969 in person, but it hasn't happened yet. Any of my Chi folks going to Fretboard Summit this weekend?

You don't need a paid Zoom account to host a meeting, but you're limited to 40 minutes, then you either have to end or have everyone jump off and restart the meeting. I had a paid account for a bit, but not anymore, I'd be willing to bet someone around still has one though.
