PSA: DHL new extra charges

So I put in an Tayda order last sunday. As I always do, I picked DHL. They were never cheap, but very reliable so I've always been willing to pay their 19$+ brokerage fees. However on my last order I have a new line item I had never seen before:

Excess line fee charge: 52$

WTF !!!!

Anyone had that before ? I'm currently talking with accounting to understand what that is.

I’ve never heard of that!
So accounting is telling me that this is a charge of 4.50$ per additional line in the documentation.

It comes with 5 lines, and will charge 4.50 per extra line. I'm looking at my documentation and they had 16 lines documented in import form.

So I guess 16-5=11*4.50 = 49.50 + taxes = 51.98$

Now I just spoke with the broker service team, this new policy was change a few weeks ago.

It use to be an extra charge of 24$ if you exceeded the max 5 line items. Now the new policy is a charge of 4.50 per extra line. Now beware that this is based on component types and each line require an extra line for the tax charges (in Canada anyway).

The logic the goes this way on my invoice:

J-FET DUAL OP-AMP
10K OHM TRIMMER POTENTIOMTER CERMET
1N4739A 1N4739 ZENER DIDOE 9.1V
22NF 0.022UF 100V 5% POLYESTER FILM
MINI TOGGLE SWITCH DPDT ON-ON
1M OHM LOGARITHMIC TAPER POTENTIOMETE
125B STYLE ALUMINIUM DIECAST ENCLOSUR
10K OHM 1/4W 1% METAL FILM RESISTOR

8 Items description + and 8 extra line call QST for taxes = 16 lines - 5 max policy = 11 line charged at 4.50$ per line.

My order was bigger than this, but they used only on item description for all my pots, all my diodes, all my poly caps.. etc...

This is absolutely ridiculous... beware that your brokerage fees will explode !

EDIT: I just realised that the used one line for all caps... however they used 2 lines for trimpot vs pots... !!!

Wtf!!! Wow I’ll be honest I’ve only used DHL once and it must’ve been right before that added this because I never got hit with any charges like that…I’m going to stick with ups….thank you for the heads but sorry for the upset this must’ve brought!

Well to be honest, 52$ won't break me, it really is the principal. A few thing tickle me in this:

- They already charge 18$ for brokerage, but that would only include 2 different item as they add a line for each taxe and it's a max of 5.
- Then they charge 4.50$ per extra lines, but as each extra item requires a tax line, that really is an extra 4.50 for you third item and after that 9$ per extra items.
- This is not capped at all, if you order something with 20 different items, you'll get hit by 35*4.50$ + taxes so about 165$ !

Now we all know that from tayda, it's not hard to get 20 different types of items.. some of us who don't read this thread will hurt !!!

I'm just glad my stash of knobs, leds, footswitch, pin connectors, sockets, etc is almost full !!!!

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZ !

DHL obviously doesn't want the small parts import business... here's a tally of my last Tayda order:

Tayda cost: 79.91$
DHL Shpping: 15.50$
DHL Service: 70.36$
Canadian tax and duty: 3.21$

So 85$ goes to DHL on a total of 167$.... WOW, just WOW !!!!

This is DHL Express right? I was freaked when my last order came in with the same small print. I think I got away with it because it was listed as a private customer and not a business.

I've always used DHL with them to the US because it was cheaper than UPS. UPS charged a brokerage fee when I tried them once, but never any fees with DHL. Guess I'll choose the extra slow shipping or find my cheap stuff someplace else from now on.

Yes DHL express, but I don't think I'm considered a business... I didn't supply any business name anywhere...

When was your last order ? You might get surprise on the next one.

I have never heard of DHL not charging brokerage fees, are you sure of this ?

I've always see charges coming in after shipping, the only one that use not to was CanadaPost/USPS, but my latest import I got a charge of about 4$ by CanadaPost.

However, I checked my previous DHL invoices and I had to pay between 25$ and 35$ for services, taxes and duty... this time the bill got up to 89$ !!!

Where are you located? Edit: Canada

I’ve never had a import tariff or brokerage fee in the US from tayda via DHL.
Really, well technically, DHL still have to file paperwork for you to import it... so how's that work, the brokerage fee is include ?

What kind of shipping cost you get for an average Tayda order (nothing with massive amount of enclosure that would make a huge weight or a huge box) ?

That’s what I pay with ups..more or less of course depending on how big the order is.
I guess we get robbed in Canada...

I've started building a new order, cuz you know we always forget something... I got about 9 boards I need to do and check my inventory for parts... next time I'll try a different shipping option.
