PSA: DHL new extra charges

You can clear the shipments yourself, but honestly your time and the price of gas to get to a CBSA office and then to DHL and wait around filing forms is probably worth more than $75.

Also, doesn't Tayda ship a lot of stuff in the USA from a domestic warehouse? That might be part of the reason you're avoiding fees.

Well yes, because I earn a lot more than a custom broker clerk... but 75$ for completing a 16 lines form is just outrageous...

LOL at the notion of a customs clerk seeing any of those fees reflected in their salary.
FTR, I never said they did, but filling up the form was probably a 15 minutes effort, clerk is probably paid what 40$/h so the whole thing cost DHL probably 10$ in labors, add 25% for infra that a running cost of 12.50$ per form and they charge me 70$+.... that's a hell of a markup...

This is DHL Express right? I was freaked when my last order came in with the same small print. I think I got away with it because it was listed as a private customer and not a business.
You're in Germany right? Can I ask what shipping costs to Europe from Tayda w/DHL? I know we then have to add import tax and VAT

This is more of an issue with your country’s border policy and import tariffs/taxes than with tayda or the shipping method.

The domestic (i.e., USA) “warehouse” tayda uses is a drop shipping location used for mail forwarding. They have no stock in the USA.

DHL shipments are never shipped from within the USA, DHL doesn't offer a domestic US service. They'll ship from the USA to another country, or from another country to the USA, but not from one US address to another.

As far as I'm aware all of Tayda's DHL shipments are coming straight from Thailand.

These surprise fees are part of the reason I decided to drop DHL as an option. They were tacking on brokerage fees and transportation fees when the package arrived at the destination. Brokerage fees are one thing, but what the heck are "transportation fees"? Is that not the shipping costs we already paid?

If the recipient declined the shipment I had the option for them to dispose of the package, or I could pay them to ship the package back to me, which was generally the same cost (if not more) as shipping it to the customer.

They also charged pickup fees when the delivery driver was already here dropping off other packages. I had to schedule a pickup and pay the fee or they wouldn't take the shipments. On more than one occasion this literally involved the driver leaving then turning around and coming back an hour or so later to pick up the packages....

Of course I had the option to drive four hours away to the nearest DHL location and drop them off myself.

In Australia, I've never had any DHL fee other than the AU$10-ish shipping. DHL from Thailand is always super quick, too, even during lockdowns.

That's at least 10 shipments, probably more like 12-13.

This is a shame coz, while they may have the weirdest fees (from that last order), they have the best tracking and most effective shipping I had to deal with. They do Thailand to Canada in 4 days…

DHL was one of my favorite but that last policy change is a show stopper.

To be complete, the cost for any package from non-EU to Germany is 19% tax/customs + €6 to DHL/Deutsche Post for their handling of the customs charge on your behalf. This is enforced on every package I receive now, no matter the size. This is B2C (business to consumer) and I need to investigate further if there are options to avoid the handling fee which really kills the cost per pedal.

Packages from Tayda with DHL are different because this is using DHL Express which is a different brand within DHL. The handling fee is 2% of the order with a minimum of €12.50 (plus the 19% tax/customs fee). See here

@EGRENIER - did you have items in storage with DHL? Those costs are me mentioned if you have to have them in storage.. at least I’m Germany

Typical $10-12. No other fees with DHL.
Same here. Tayda insisted I take my PO box off the address, and then of course DHL delivered to...you guessed it, my local post office. DHL has never had a convincing presence where I live, so it's slow boat for me from here on out I guess.

Nope no storage, just order and deliver….the extra costs were clearly explained to me…extra line items to fill on the form, 2 lines per items, 4.50$ a line !

One interesting thing I notice is my package is not going through the usual route. Normally it does Bangkok, honk Kong, Cincinnati, Montreal…

This one so far has done Bangkok, barhrain, Leipzig…. ???

is that what you're paying for? your parts getting an around the world vacation? Glad a I do live in the States, I pick the Fed-Ex(when I need it fast)or cheapo option(finally leg is postal)none of these extras get tagged on.

No see above, I clearly detailed what caused the extra cost. New policy on the number of lines filled by the broker on the Canadian Import form... at a cheap cost of 4.50$ per line.... Old policy was capped at a max of 24$ of broker fees...
