Alright, I built my first fuzz pedal. Unfortunately, its perfect and I won't ever have to build another one.
I didn't have a B1K pot for the fuzz knob so I used a 5K pot and ran a resistor across the legs. The first one I tried brought the value down to below 1K and I couldn't get the bias adjusted enough to make it work with the fuzz cranked all the way up, and so I tired a different combo and landed somewhere around 1.8K and I really like the way it sounds, still has plenty of wool but also cuts pretty well. I used it at a rehearsal last night with a large band (two drummers, two guitars, bass, keys, and percussion) and was right where I wanted to be in the mix.
To be ready in time for said rehearsal, I did a rush job on the enclosure, and didn't account for the led footswitch size. It just barely doesn't hang over the edge. Also, the knobs almost prevent each other from turning when the pointers meet. I love that they are bordering on too big.
I used BC108 b transistors.
Anyway, the real takeaway is that the Sandspur is a really great sounding fuzz that's easy to build and I would encourage anyone that's a novice builder like myself to give it a try.
