Source for Low-Pro caps?

When I'm buying caps I usually filter by whatever voltage rating and capacitance I need and then compare ESR, maximum ripple current and life expectancy specs of different manufacturers and series. I'll buy whoever got the "best" specs, i. e. low ESR, high max ripple current, decent life span, which often leads to the usual recommended brands. This may be overkill for our purposes but I like the peace of mind. I'm not familiar with CDE/Illinois Capacitor but I probably would not buy those simply because the specs don't look good comparatively.
They have been around forever and are the sole producer of Orange Drop caps for the last decade or so, among other things. ;)

Knowledge gap filled. Thanks 😄
The Illinois branded ones were standard in many Fender amps for quite a while too, they may still be.

As with most caps in pedals, I tend to buy whatever color looks best in a given build, to me the rest is mostly just fluff.

You pick a color? You’re FANCY! 🧐
I just go with the hodgepodge of what I have on hand.

Interesting, I stumbled on this thread just now. @Passinwind made a very relevant comment (#15 on page 1 of this thread) - these catalog attributes are often absent or incorrect, as they are either manually entered or automatically grepped.

Hence, when you specific a constraining height dimension and that attribute is absent for a specific part #, then that part won't show in the filtered results - even if it does actually satisfy the search filter requirements. So when the search fails, you can end up being forced to manually parse thru the exceptions. It's a drag. And, of course, as @Big Monk surely knows all too well - another way around this quandary is to poll other forum folks, as he has done here.

Looking through Mouser, there are a couple things I'm wondering about - 1000 hours vs 3000? Seems obvious to go for the longer life, but I've never looked at that info before. Same with ripple current.

Some have 1.5mm lead spacing as well, which I'm sure is close enough to 2mm...? Under "lead style" it has Straight or Cut options. No clue.

Anybody use @Cybercow's SMD hack of pullin the plastic off and just using those? They're always nice and short. Sounds like you'd have to be careful with the soldering tabs, but seems like another good possibility. He and others got this kit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W4K17DL

No-name electrolytics, though... I've been warned about that!

I've noticed this, and it's incredibly frustrating. Plus, some of the constraints are completely opaque - for an elcap, what in the world is the difference between "straight" and "cut" lead styles?? I've seen short, kinked leads but I doubt that's what "cut" is...
I've been switching over to just using smd for awhile, whenever one of my electro values runs out
They've been working ok for through-hole pcbs? Why did you switch - Size? Cost?

yep they work fine, I just like the way it looks and they're usually pretty cheap for decent nichicon/panasonic caps
Where do you get yours? If I didn't already have to order from Mouser I'd completely abandon them as an option for this - it's drivin me nuts. Too many options/parameters/brands/inscrutable measurements... And this isn't my first Mouser rodeo! Still rough stuff.

I think I landed on some 5mm Rubycons (end of life? Sign me up! 🤦‍♂️). The SMD seem like something I'll eventually try, but the tiny leads give me pause.

Had to call Mouser to clarify Lead Style - "straight" vs "cut". Stumped the tech person, they're contacting Rubycon!

In other words, I haven't picked any yet. If anybody has go-to lo-pros, I'm all ears. Staring at Mouser's site is giving my the spins.

The Rubycons are 1" on the long side and .75" on the short side, I just measured one myself a moment ago. Straight, not bent. I bought a few hundred more in 47uF and 22uF from Mouser a month or three ago.

The problem is, there are SO many variations. I need to get pretty much everything from 1uf-100uf (220uf+ too, but not available as lo-pro).

For example, these two are in the exact same series, and the part numbers are almost identical. Under Lead Style, one says Straight and one says Cut. The one that says Cut doesn't seem to have a Straight version that I could find in this series - there are a few like that. The may wind up looking the same when they show up, but I don't know - Mouser didn't either. There's no indication that the leads will actually be snipped back, and certainly no measurement of how long they'd be afterwards. Take a look:

This is a 1mm lead spaced SMD cap. It fits the standard PPCB pad like a glove. I actually like them better because they don’t fall out when you flip it upside down. No need to bend/trim the legs etc, just cleaner.

Yeah, what a PITA! I never ran into that, it may be a function of the end of life thing and Mouser buying up whatever stock is still available?

Hmm that does look pretty good. They might not work as well for Vero and perf since sometimes ya need to kinda use the lead length..

I considered that too, but they weren't able to clarify that at all - they're pingin' Rubycon about it though!

I think you're overthinking the cut/straight thing. The datasheet for that series has minimum lead lengths. It would be nice to know but I don't think it's a dealbreaker, neither of them will be cut so short you can't use them.
I hope you're right! I figured a quick call would clear that up, but instead the (very nice) tech said "eh, not so fast. Let's look into it.". Shorter is fine, but nubs are not! I agree, that would be surprising - still, I'd rather get it right the first time.
